Why is everyones reply to cam questions custom grind? I would rather have a grind that is proven and that I can get an idea to what kinda power it's going to make. I worked at an automotive machine shop for 6 years and never seen anyone go with a custom cam .

cause those are made for a broad number of modifications which are better then stock but if u want a cam spesifically for your application to give u maximum performance for the rpm range your engine will be at u get a coustom grind.

There are a bunch of off the shelf cams. There isn't really a custom grind. Between comp, crane and lunati, there really isn't a "custom" grind. It has all been done before and they all have part numbers...

its made for what you have in your car. putting a regular cam is like pushing a circle into an oval shaped hole, a custom will fill the whole area

In saying what ya'll have said if you had a car similar to his and you wanted to put a CAM in it and it still be driveable without changing heads and pistons what would it be and what Brand? How much lift? Maybe a link to the exact ones you guys would buy would probably help him and me im fixing to do the same Upgrade....

No it all hasn't been done before and no they don't have all of the part numbers. There is more to camshafts than duration and lift.

No a custom cam isn't always needed. In a mild street application where the car is more for driving than performance an off the shelf cam will work fine. If performance is your main goal then you should look into a custom grind from one of the leading cam gurus. Off the shelf cams will make horsepower, there is no doubt about that but you will be leaving alot of power under the table. Off the shelf cams are ground to fit a broad spectrum of applications. That is why they give you compression ratio range, torque converter range, intake manifold type, gear ratio range, transmission type, weight, etc. in the catalogs under each cam description. This is backwards engineering. When you pick a cam, you tell the grinder what you have and he grinds the cam to match your combination....not the other way around.
