horsepower wins races.

HP = (rpm x TQ)/5252

so torque without rpm does nothing. torque with rpm is HP.

also, back pressure is not what retains low-end power, it is exhaust velocity. back pressure is actually a bad thing always. back pressure can aid velocity, but it is always better to have velocity with no back pressure.

Torque is for pulling your car trailer. Horsepower is for winning races.

You say that because you rev to 8.5k. and prolly make a bit over 600hp in you black car. If you had a 6k revving BBF you would be more prone to praise torque. They are linked,and equally important. unless you wanna be like a honda and raise the redline to 8k so you can make 160hp from 111lbft.

Carroll Shelby has said that "horsepower sells cars, torque wins races"

Taking your tail pipes off and putting on dumps offers a gain so small (if there even is a gain) that you will not notice it but you will notice the lovely carbon monoxide entering your interior.
Absolutely. I dont know how many times this has to be said.

The upper portion of this response is wrong. I hope the new guys that read info like this arent so gullable, and actually do their homework.

Thank you. Atleast someone understands.

Its aggrivating to see so many people actually believe you NEED backpressure. Backpressure does not help torque or horsepower production, anywhere or at any point in the curve, idle or WOT at peak rpm. You dont NEED backpressure. Even 2 cycle engines dont need backpressure, contrary to popular belief.

Actually I made just over 700 horsepower at 7200 rpm. My car did around 8400 or so out the back door with 4.56 gears. It wasn't making peak power there, that was where it was reving too with deep gears combined with the mph I was running and a damaged converter that slipped pretty bad. My motor makes all kinds of torque because it is so big.

As far as a big block goes, I still wouldn't be concerned with torque because it would make 700+ horsepower at 6500 rpm instead of 7000+ rpm. Sure it would make more torque by default but the horsepower is what is going to win the race. Even better is more horsepower with more rpm.

Thats a good post. Torque is still equally important though. A stock mustang can make 1000HP with 300 lbft.......@ 17000 rpm.

with the right gearing though that would be a fun ride...even on the street.
