Lookin for a 5.0
just signed up on this site. don't yet have a mustang, but will soon. i'm not one of those kids that just wanna yack about stuff they can't afford. i used to be one of those guys, and there's nothing wrong with that. just wanna let people know that they can take my comments and questions seriously. i'm kind of debating on what body style i wanna get. when i was in high school, i was in love with the fox body. still am. but, i like the comfort factor inherent in a newer model. not that the fox was an uncomfortable heap. i don't really know. i DO know that i want a 5.0. any help or advice i could get from you guys would be greatly appreciated. i don't really know anyone where i am who's into cars and i don't really have a community of people to get words of wisdom from in my area. i guess that's one of the great things about the internet. so, if any of you guys wanna help guide me through my search process and eventually badass-ification of my future love machine, that would be tits.
later and thanks, B |

Well I'll start with a
! I love the fox's and would strongly suggest you get one. So what are you looking for as far as what your going to do with it? I personally like the GT hatch backs but the LX copes are like 100-200 pounds lighter so that would be the one to get for the racing. As for the year, 89 is the year you want to get or an 88 if your in Ca. they have the forged internals, MAF (which is easier for tuning), I think 88 was the last year of the T Top (maybe 87?) and 89 was the last year for the tilt searing wheel. If you don't care about the tilt then your good with 89-92 they were rated at 225HP and 300lb-ft of torque. In 93 they changed to a hypertunic piston and the HP rating went down to 205.

Where do you live? Your local Craigslist would be a great place to start looking for your future love machine!

foxbody...cuz the sn95's are not as easy to find parts for the...the 5.0 foxbody's are by far the easiest to find parts for, the cheapest and some of the easiest to spend little cash on to go fast....i would seriously reccomend if you are looking to do fuel injection than go 89-92, cuz 89 is the first year of Mass air, has the 8.8, and 92 is last year before 93 when they put hypertaunic pistons in over 89-92's forged pistons...
GT, LX and Notch are all dependent on what you like for looks... oh yeah welcome to the site...

i agree stay with the fox
i have a 85 T-top with a 92 nose and its gonna be my favorite looking car when its finished and i agree with speed stang the fox's are easy and cheep to make go fast and imo the pushrod engines are easyer to work on then the modulars and stay away from the hypertaunic pistons there junk you will want to make sure your engine has forged internals if you want to go over 500 hp

I would reccomend craig's list thats where i found my car. Just like they said look at 89-92 because they already have mass air but if you find a really clean 87-88 it's not that hard or expensive to convert them to mass air. I would say try to find the cleanest body the other stuff is pretty easy to fix.

as for what i wanna do with it. i drive a "dependable" type sedan, ya know. accords aren't exactly the high performance machines that every red-blooded American want to burn through the streets in. i'm not getting rid of it. gas prices and all. but i want something to kinda tinker with. not a junker that needs a complete overhaul, but something that might need a few odds and ends. and eventually, get a strong 1/4 mi. time. embarrass some ricers. while keeping it looking stock (mostly stock. wheels are the first thing to go.) any way, thanks for the quick reply and look forward to hearing back from you. |

Well these are definitely the car you want, there is unlimited parts out there for these cars and you can build them up comparatively cheap, including the price of the car. As stated earlier you want a 89-92 for the MAF and HP but if you live in Ca. the 88s will have the Mass Air Flow as well. I wouldn't suggest buying the first one you see, shop around for a few weeks and keep your eye on your local Craigslist. I did the same and got a pretty good deal on mine (although people have done better) I got my 88GT Hatch with MAF, exhaust, Grant steering wheel, 89,000 miles and a 6 month old paint job for 2,600. Then I found my Weld Draglites and ET Streets for 380 on Craigslist and sold my pony wheels on Cragslist for $200 and a 70mm BBK EGR spacer. That puts me at $2,780 for my car the way it sits, I've even had a guy in a turbo Eclipse follow me of the freeway just to tell me I had a bad ass car!
