what is the catch code on the side? reference that code with the description at this link: Ford Fuel Injection » EEC Program Codes

but, auto and manual ECMs will both work fine a manual tranny (i'd actually prefer an auto ECM)

click the link i posted. it will explain where to find the code and what vehicle the ECM came in as well as whether it was for an auto or a manual.

i also pointed out, that it makes no difference whether the ECM is for an auto or a manual. it will work fine for a manual. the auto ECMs have a bit more timing advance programmed into them for WOT below 2k rpm.

not if you use the correct 5 speed wiring harness, with the gear switch hooked up.

do you understand the last part now? i don't mind explaining it better if necessary.

there is a switch on your manual tranny that tells the ECM whether the tranny is in gear or not. if the switch is open the ECM believes the tranny is in gear, closed indicates that the tranny is in neutral. without this switch your ECM will think you are in gear so it will use a different "strategy" and this can mess up your idle.

the gear switch also works with your clutch switch to allow you to start the engine. if either switch is closed you can start the engine. in other words, you can start the engine with the tranny in gear if your clutch pedal is pressed in, or you can start your car in neutral if the clutch is up.

either one of the switches is shorted, or the switch connector has been jumpered. be careful, this is what happened to a guy i know from another forum when he accidently started his in gear:

his car was in reverse and he backed into the garage with his door open. the door got folded flat against the fender. thankfully he did not get hurt.
