Clutch Kit
I'm looking to upgrade the clutch since I have gone this far, I was thinking of installing a "King Cobra" clutch kit. I have been told this was the route to go and that this kit will not allow as much "slippage" as stock and it will not grab like a race type clutch therfore not immediatly destroying the transmission. What are the other opinions out there???

I had a king clutch with my stock 302 and killed fast... My budget Ebay/ No name brand clutch has out lasted the king cobra clutch. When I redo mine I will put in a stage 2 clutch. They bite harder but not enough to hurt a T5. They cost more but if you are going to drive it even a little hard that is what I would do. Plus, you don't want to have to replace it very often. they suck unless you have a lift and a tranny jack... I don't.
BTW, as for the brand, you get what you pay for. I will probably buy an ACT stage 2... maybe stage 3. Last edited by problemCOBRA94; January 6th, 2008 at 12:26 AM. Reason: after thought |

I've gone through several King Cobra clutches and find them to be excessively stiff for the clamp that you get. You probably won't go wrong with one...just that this old man thinks there's a better way. IMO the idea is to get the most clamp with the least pedal effort so the car is fun and easy to drive. The Centerforce was good for that with it's sliding weights.
Now I'm using a Spec 3+ which is much more aggressive but has easier pedal pressure than the Spec 3. I'm extremely pleased with the clutch and even more so with the company. (They stood behind my Stage 3 even when it was my fault that it was destroyed! It's a long story, but those guys went out of their way to help me.) If I were going for a mostly street Fox, I'd look really close at the SPEC Stage 2. It will probably cost a bit more than the King Cobra, but there is a warranty, it's made in America, and you can talk to very knowledgeable people. If you look at my website you'll see the equipment I'm using with those clutches. Good luck with your choice. Jim

I've just about finished building a 306 hope to get 350-375 HP out of it, but hopefully in the near future I will be able to afford a supercharger. So my dilema is prepare for the future and get maybe a Spec 3 or 3+ or just go with the stage 2. What's your opinions, I need to have one at my door step by Thursday of this week.

If you don't like your T5 very much and are interested in replacing it, get a spec stage 3. Transmission killer if you take it to the track and use sticky tires. The king cobra isn't the greatest. I recommend the non-king cobra FORD HD clutch. The one with the extra pedal pressure. It just grips better. If you want to go with a spec, stage 2 maximum, unless a trans replacement is in your budget.
As far as them wearing out fast, I have had a HD clutch on my 88 since 2002 and it has seen countless dragstrip passes with 5K rpm launches and has not only saved my T-5, but is still very good (1.5 second 60 foots). The key to making everything work is cleanliness (use a full bottle of brakleen on the parts before installation), new pilot/ throwout bearings, a FORD clutch cable, and a resurfaced flywheel. Replace the rear main seal as well, a leaking rear main with destroy a clutch quickly.

i've used my king cobra for a little over 7 months and still no problems...i bought a centerforce dual friction clutch (which not 1 person i read recommended) and i thought i would swap it out immediatly, 2 months later king cobra's still going...if it aint broke dont fix it..the cobra isnt a bad clutch, pedal pressure is a little stiff..but ANYTHING is better than stock..i've had no problem with wearing and nor heard of them wearing quick...that HD clutch ryan recommend i heard a couple good things about so far...
but im set with my centerforce..even with 347 in later...

Ford doesn't rate it that high, I'm just going on personal experience. Centerforce does make a good clutch too. They feel weird IMO, but a lot of people like them.

What's wrong with my wheels? They are ROH RTs finished in Black ICE, 17 x 8 up front with 18 x 9 in the rear. I think they look bad ass.

I ditched my ram for a centerforce, the ram was killer the CF feels weaker than it is, but after 25K and about 100 or so 1/4 mile runs it's starting to slip. IMO, Get the strongest clutch, either way, over time the trans is gonna go. Might as well start out with an aggressive clutch and get used to it. My old ram was a bitch to drive, it was in or out. Kinda like a light switch.
