true i dont know much but who said that ive been ignoring those links, im doin research as i get time, and if i dont ask questions and jump right in and just do it then i could see messing it up but its not like im doin them right now, and still my question goes unawnsered about the shims for the pinion, i know its gotta be within +/- .002 of the pinion dimensions and that the pinon preload and backlash are important and that the sipder gears have to seat right as well as the ring or else they will knock 2gether and break teeth......
do the shims have to snig up against the pinion shaft or are the shims ok if they fit around the shaft with a little extra room? |

You use pinion shims designed for shimming the pinion.

Here is a complete kit with everything you need including new axle bearings and seals, carrier and pinion shims, carrier and pinion bearings, crush sleeve, pinion nut, gears, etc... Then you only need the tools...that is the expensive part.

the pinion depth has to be within +/- .002 off the dimensions but still, do the shims have to fit tight arounf the pinion? and i am working on the research

They need to be the shims made specifically for shimming the pinion...ya dig?
If you got some shims laying around that have a slightly bigger hole....NO... you can't use them. It isn't worth doing if you aren't going to do a complete rebuild kit. So just buy a complete kit. THe link I posted above is a cheap complete kit, quit trying to cut corners or you will not be happy with the results.

That is easier if you have some help removing the trans. The only specialty tools you need are a torque wrench and an alignment tool. If you are going to replace the pilot bearing (recommended), then you need a puller or a slide hammer (you can rent them for free from autozone).

Is the current clutch bad? does it slip? why replace it? You go from gears to a clutch. Why would you think of gears if it needs a clutch. If you just want to launch harder, I guess put in a bad ass clutch. But that is all you are going to get out of a clutch. And why would you need a new fork?
If you are after performance, I probably would just do the gears. I did mine. So far Ryans88GT is right about everything pertaining to the gears. I have 4.10 gears and they are a bit much though. It is a bitch of a job that may take trial and error. I had to do mine twice to get the pinion depth right. Even being off the slightest bit wont work. It will make loud noises, grind the gears, break them, break your axle housing, etc. Do your homework and you should be ok though. also, with gears, get All NEW bearings. You won't get much performance out of a clutch except for launching hard. |
