Valve train noise on a 4.6l

I asked something similar in the modular forum but got no responses so I reworded it and will post here in a forum where I typically hang out.. If a mod does not want it here, don't bother moving it, just delete it.

I looked at a 98 GT today. Seemed to make a lot of noise in the upper part of the engine. Almost like valve or valve train noise, not like one valve but the whole thing. It was loud enough that it was only only thing you could hear while hanging around near the engine compartment and even with the hood shut and about 5 feet away, you could still hear it. I had an old 2.4l 4cyl Mitsubishi engine in the past that sounded similar and the timing chain guides were worn. I test drove but did not really get on it but the sound did not seem to get louder. The car has 125K and I believe the car was completely stock. Do the 4.6l have guides for the timing chain and do those typically wear out or is this thing in really bad shape?

I know the 96-98 are not most people first choice but this would be a "sixth car" and my "third" mustang and only for 100% street and daily driver use that will be shared among the four of us in the house that drive.

i had that problem in my 92 crown vic, the first year of the 4.6 in the vic. it sounded like a handfull of nickles in the top end, needless to say i sold it to the junkyard for 35 buck... along with that noise, blown tranny, noisy rear end, and at WOT i lost power to everything, car ran awesome, just no electricity after 5k lol... p.s. i ran that car HARD, whent through 4 transmissions and 2 motor mounts soo if the noise on that car is the same as mine was, i would stay the hell away from that thing!

I'd steer clear, there are plenty of cars without that kind of noise, find one of those.

That "noise" you're talking about is very typical on the mod motors. It is not (by itself) a sign of trouble.

Interesting. Well this one was pretty cheap and the the main reason I looked at it. This one is probably gone but I will scope out a few more so I know what to expect.
