Looking at early '80s GT, need opinions
OK, I've circulated a bit on the 2.3 forum but just recently a 5.0 GT came up for sale. The car is a '79-'82 (no year listed, but the car has street rod plates which means it must be 25 years old). The paint is shoddy at best and there is rust on one of the fenders and quarter panels, along with minor rust spots on the bumpers and hood along with other little places. There is a gaping chunk of paint missing under the passenger side door and a few spots of missing paint on the front bumper. The right rear tail light is also cracked (very minor). Enclosed are pictures of the major rust spots and paint chips.
Now, that was the bad news. The good news is the car has 110,000 miles and a rebuild. Performance upgrades include 600 Holley carb, Edelbrock manifold, comp cam and lifters, racing springs all around, 3.73 gears, new tires, new timing chain, headers, and flowmaster mufflers. The owner wants $4500 but I really only want to give $3500 as the rust and paint will have to be addressed and I will probably have to repalce that tail light. Is $3500 a fair price to offer or should I just move on from this one?

I would say keep looking seems like every mustang for sale has a rebuild and for that kind of money I would think you could buy a cleaner car and then throw the rest of the cash into upgrades....but thats just my opinion....I only gave 4500 bucks for my 95 with about 45,000 miles on it found someone who needed cash pretty bad cause I am in mexico and cars are generally a little more expensive here...look around there are deals to be had out there especially in the states I am looking for a fox now and its hard to find here

I also have to mention that I live in the most affluent state in the country (Maryland) and that cars are not cheap here. A beat up 2.3L with 200,000 miles went from $1,500 just 2 months ago. Anything here that is rear wheel drive is very expensive.

No, the Chevy is the daily car. The Mustang is a weekend-only car. I need the street rod plates or historic plates to get cheap insurance (means I can only drive on weekends and to weekday shows). Plus I'm only 17, I think the upgrades on this car are as much as I can handle right now.

pass on that, i also live in maryland and you just have to keep looking. it may take a little bit but if you don't mind driving look in PA and VA also on Craig's list and ebay, and get auto trader and such the day they come out for the good deals. another trick is when you are looking on ebay look at the newly listed for a possible good buy it now price, you can find a better deal for that for sure for less than 5K

Maybe if I can knock him down under $3000 then? I doubt he will go that low, but I pay cash so he might.

I am going to let this one slide, I think I might be better off looking for a good '64-'73 project 'Stang.

At 17 years old, this isnt a good idea. Im not trying to beat you up or disrespect you at all, so dont take it that way. Building a classic mustang takes alot of money and time. Most teens dont have the patience and finance to do it. If your looking to buy one thats already put together.. and runs.. thats great and is your best bet. I wouldnt look for one as a project car... it'll end up being sold before you ever finish it. Ive been there.

Yeah, I'd say that car would demand $1500-2000 in a normal 'stang market.

I didnt realize you would have help. Tackling a project like that on your own would end up being a waste of money and time on your behalf. Thats cool you've got the resources and location to do it. Good luck to you.
