massive t5 problem!!!

ok so me and my dad rebuilt my t5 and we hit some snags. when you wathc this rebuild vid we got the guy takes the tailhouse case and pushes it flush witht he main case. on our we cant do that so we have to bolt it on and it draws it to the main case. however when we do that everythgin freezes up. the shafts should spin freely and easily and you should be able to shift throught the gears but we cant. its wierd its like its stuck somewhere. when the case is off thos everythgin is free and you can move the shift shaft and go through the gears but when the tailshaft housing is on you can. its the wierdest thing ever. theres no spacers in the input housing thing were the race is cause we thought that might be the prob but it isnt. can anyone help me out here. im super frustrated and i dunno what to do!!!

What is in the way of the tailshaft...that is your problem. Are you going with a larger 5th gear, like a 0.70 or something. If so you have to have the tailshaft machined with a larger gear pocket. Also, it could be the offset shift linkage binding up, does it move freely?

everythign moves freely. im using the stock gear that was in the trans when i got it. when i got it everythgin ran fine except the synchros were bad. anyway when i put the tailhousing on it all moves freely up until the point where the top o-ring hits the top of the shiftplate thingy. like theres about a 2cm's in between the tailhousing and the main case. from there when you go to bolt it in to draw the 2 togehter thats when the binding happens. this is the only thing we cant figure out. everythgin else works perfect everythgin moves and works how its supposed too. this is the only thing hangin me up.

You shouldn't have to use the bolts to draw it together. Find out what is keeping the two pieces from coming together...that is your problem. Check the bushing in the tail housing. Maybe use some white paint to findout what is touching the tail housing and causing the interference.

sounds like to me when you put the shift fork plate back on that you had the transmission engaged in 2 gears instead of neutral. Had this happen once.

no it sounds like tthe rear bearing race isnt pushed in all the way before u put the tailshaft housing on that tace needs to be all the way in with no movement of the shaft..

it could actually be a few things.. the race could not be in all the way when u install the rear case..
when your putting the rear case on it could be going into gear

but also if u put new blocking rings on they could be getting pressed in tight and when it is not spinning it will feel like it is locked try to put the clutch disk at the end and turn real hard is should break loose and spin freely... mine did the same yourse is doing..

I would think one of the fifteen rollers in the input shaft has dropped pushing the output shaft too far back. You'll likely have to pull it back apart and see what's out of place.
