Finally Got A 5.0!
Well it's about time I actually came across a deal. I found a '87 mustang lx coupe that was originally a 4 cyl car and it was converted to a 5.0 using an entire '87 5.0 donor car. Everything has been swapped on it. I picked it up for $1400 and drove it 2 hours home without any problems aside from needing some brake work. Here it is.

nice car, i have always wanted a coupe, but i already have two hatchbacks. Just one thing that is a personal opinion of mine...i hate the red interior in all of the foxes. Do you plan on keeping the interior or switching it out? Anyway, awesome find and it looks like you have a great car in your hands!

Well, I am not one for red interior to say the least, but I plan on putting black carpet in, black buckets, and removing the rear seat and putting a black rear seat delete in to help calm down the red interior. So hopefully that will be enough. As far as drivability the car needs brake work, and the engine is smoking, so I'm either planning on rebuilding this engine to a 331 or 347 stroker, or purchasing a used but low miles factory shortblock with the flat top forged pistons. Either way It will have about 300-375bhp. The real debate is wether or not I should keep the 2:73's in the rear end for highway use, or should down gear it with some 3:55s or 3:73s. And for looks how would a GT body kit look on a coupe?

Great plan for the delete kit and the carpet, seats etc. As for the gears, i think you will enjoy going lower, but it depends on your wallet. i know that my buddy has a coupe auto like yours, but has 4:10s. that car will get up and go, but his parents pay for the gas. i think that 3:55s will make you happy compared to the 2:73s, but it depends on how you want to drive and your money! Good Luck

sweet dude now you can join the moddedmustangs garage: http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums/garage.php
when you say smoking do you mean like valve cover gasket oil dripping on the manifolds or smoking from the exhaust?

It's smoking through the exhaust, the motor is about wore out, but it will still leave two fat black marks half way down the road. haha. The car used to be a 4 cyl 5 speed, and it was converted to the 5.0/aod. So when I get the rebuild done and everything on the motor I had plans of putting a T5 in the AOD place, and run with the T5 until i can afford a T56 or TKO.

Racer Walsh Makes it, you can buy the transmisson and the bell housing from them, or just the bell housing.

nice project. good deal for the condition even if you have to clean it up, change the interior and build the motor. at least the initial swap has already been done.

Nice, I would love to have a Fox coupe. I already have 2 Mustangs so a 3rd would be even better. Enjoy the ride. You can pick up 3.55s pretty cheap since they are very common in the new Stangs and alot of people ditch them for 4.10s etc.

if you have any intentions of doing the 5 speed swap go 4.10s youll never regret it! i have 4.10s in mine and i daily drive it and highway drive it. but you got yourself a nice little project, but pleaseeee no GT body kit!!!! LXs are sexy the way the are, put maybe a nice 4 inch cowl on it with some nice wheels and leave it!!! such as:

Well I got my transmission. It's a "Hurst" T5 out of an '84 SVO with the Short Throw Hurst Shifter.
The Ratio's are: 1st 4.03 2nd 2.37 3rd 1.50 4th 1.00 5th 0.86 I've already got the 5.0 bellhousing, and Input shaft, I still need a flywheel and a clutch though, Looks like a wheelie poppin' first gear, haha. Oh yeah, I have some factory 16x7 SVO aluminum wheels, and an SVO hood forsale if anyone is interested. Make an offer. |
