Ripping Ripoff...

Newbies and even those who say "screw i'll pay anyways, i don't feel like installing"...

NEVER I REPEAT NEVER EVEN THINK about calling your local Ford Company. I called them to get a price quote on installing 3.73 gears in my beast 5.0 GT and there over the head price was....... $1,500.00. JUST TO INSTALL GEARS!!!

Now don't get me wrong Ford is Good but the service techs with there BS Devry insition certs sucks ass. DON'T THAT JUST SUCK DUCK!??? A local shop gave off a WAAAAAAAAY cheaper price around $150.00 $200.00 That sounded much better. I wish I could have gotten a pay out for the difference I would have a new block with new pistons.

So I know you're like "Dude, who are you telling" but hey just helping because it makes no sense to charge $300.00 labor to install new engine then POOF!!!!!! $1,500 bucks for 2 gears and other little parts which aint nothing. I would install myself and although it a first timer, i have no problems fuckin it up LOL

An independent garage will charge you about $200-$300.

Yeah I am not a mechanic, but I do work on engines left and right even the one I have in my pops truck (351W).

But yeah that's just stupid of these "big" companies doing that. Altough is a sceme that will work for those "Who think it's a ford, it has to go to them" or those who are like "Screw it I have to get it done and I know nothing".

Why fuck them over like that though, mayme 800 -900 sounds better (Still to high) but at least it won't hit me in the chest, i'll be like... "Ok, I know there's someone cheaper" not ... "WHAT!!!!!!!!!!! THATS FREAKIN HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I always figured that if someone else can do it, why can't I? If all I am missing is the proper tools, then I would rather buy the tools, do it myself, and still save money.

I totally agree that 99% of all Ford Dealerships are rip offs. I have had my fair share with them... believe me!

Also, I would highly recommend not installing your own gears. Its a complicated job and a job best left to the professionals. Im not saying that you couldnt do it but they are complicated and its something that you should have experience in before trying it. Also, price depends on where you are located because it was REALLY hard to even find a decent place to install them for under $400 dollars. I checked about 15 different places also. And beware that alot of shops do not like to install gears that are not Ford Racing because some of them have fitment issues to begin with and they do not want to be help responsible to gear whinning, etc. Atleast that is what I have been told by a number of shops. Good Luck

If you dont know hwo to install gears then you have to pay someone that does know how to do them...

Check the local boards and see if you can find someone who can install them around you...

Or become really good friends with a tech @ ford and see how much they will charge you to do it on the "side"...

Correct... it is very hard to install your own gears and its definetly not something recommended. Especially since its not like it takes 10 mintues to do.

And as for tools, there are a bunch of them that you need but I am not exactally sure. You need to having everything shimmed PERFECT down to the milimeter.

Gears are not a shadetree mechanics job...

Do it right the first time...

Like I said find a shop or see if one of the mechanics will do it on the side...

Best idea is go on local mustang boards and find a gear installer there...

A little less time ranting and raving and trying to prove to us how funny you are, GTXRacing, and a little more time spent on the condition of your vehicle, would be a better return on your time and money. Now, take 88BlueGT's ride; for a vehicle that's not even begun to show it's potential, it's at least, a clean, well maintained ride. Check out some of the other late eighties vehicles here and take a lesson. Less BS and more elbow grease. Show us what you can do, or step off. This is just my opinion. Take it, or not.

OK, OK. I don't need to justify myself to anyone here. Just go to the following web site and see where GTXRacing got all of his material (http://hotrodhomepage.com/?p=71). Lazy, with a smart mouth is one thing - and almost tolerable, at times; but stealing material from someone else is another. First, he can't even clean up his rat car (check out his engine bay, it's a riot!). Now, he can't even make up his own words.

I don't know where you guys are getting the impression that installing gears is brain surgery. it is not that complicated.....it does however take some tools.

if gears are all that is being changed then by all means learn how. It takes about two hours or so of your time, and can be a very worthwhile thing to learn to do.

What do you need...hmmmm. A slide hammer to bump the axles out of the housing (make sure you take the bolts out of the bearing retainer), an impact wrench to remove the bolts holding the carrier in the housing, the tools required to removed the u-joints, and an impact socket to fit the ring gear bolts and pinion gear nut. A press is most helpful, and that can be worked around if you are ingenious enough to figure out how to work it out with a bottle jack and some backyard engineering.

the only other things needed are a replacement crush sleeve (if needed on these later rears), and some colored grease (lithium grease works fine since it is white).

You can find any number of how tos on the net that will give you the info needed to do it in your driveway, and you will find that there is no magic to it at all. I build my own rearends (chebbie, ford, and dana (mopar)).

Spend theextra money on good gears, and some shop equipment. You can use all the stuff I mentioned elsewhere on other parts of the car at some time or other.

That's what I said way back on 28 Sept. Then the instigators started, so I sidetracked and spent sometime on juvenile counseling. I don't believe it worked. You know, I've worked on $25,000,000 jet aircarft (F-16, F-15, etc.), along with many Soviet Sam missile systems and AAA units, and some of the most advanced tanks in the world. A Mustang gear change isn't going to stump me, I'm sure.

if it does it woudl really surprise me. I have been playing with cars for a long time, and the Ford modular rears (9" especially) are some of the easiest and most bulletproof designs around. If you can't figure out how to do a gear change on your own with almost no tools, then you shoudl not own a hot car. Guys with a fistful of knowledge and a little common sense have been training dealer tech monkeys to do things like gear changes for decades.....lol.
