Heat question

Last year I couldn't get any heat out my 89 LX. With in the last year I've changed the water pump and the thermostat but that didn't seem to help. In the last couple of months I've gotten a small coolant leak, not sure from where, but I can smell it and it pools on top of the timimg cover. Well since the leak started I've started getting heat now. Any ideas as to what is going on?
Thanks
Jeff

maybe heater core? if you get some smoke in the car and you still smell it, it is probably the heater core. swapping it out requires removal of the entire dash and is about 3 hours total work or a couple hundred bucks in labor at a shop. if it is the core, just remove the hose for it (disable it) until you can fix it.

It's not the heater core, coolant is pooling on the motor from somewhere. The fact that I've got heat now is a good thing, I can still control it. I was just curious as to why it took a leak for the heat to start working.

Most likely you installed the waterpump or thermostat gasket wrong, and it didnt seal properly.

Anyone ever replace the lower intake gasket to the heads?

The front coolant passages on most felpro gaskets have to be cut out to match the ports and if you don't do that the flow is restricted by the gasket making the heat issue you discribe and eventually the water over the restrictive gasket bends it and tears it and causes a leak between the lower intake and the head that puddles on the timeing cover. Uasually the drivers side is the 1st to go.
