maybe heater core? if you get some smoke in the car and you still smell it, it is probably the heater core. swapping it out requires removal of the entire dash and is about 3 hours total work or a couple hundred bucks in labor at a shop. if it is the core, just remove the hose for it (disable it) until you can fix it.

It's not the heater core, coolant is pooling on the motor from somewhere. The fact that I've got heat now is a good thing, I can still control it. I was just curious as to why it took a leak for the heat to start working.

maybe u had some air in the lines i drill a small holl in my termostad to let any air out of the system i read these in a book the i got call (5.0 performance hanbook) lots of cool stuf in there

Most likely you installed the waterpump or thermostat gasket wrong, and it didnt seal properly.

The front coolant passages on most felpro gaskets have to be cut out to match the ports and if you don't do that the flow is restricted by the gasket making the heat issue you discribe and eventually the water over the restrictive gasket bends it and tears it and causes a leak between the lower intake and the head that puddles on the timeing cover. Uasually the drivers side is the 1st to go.
