Think It's An OK Idea To...


I was wondering if it was a ok/good idea to put 3.73 in a completely stock '90 GT to get some more around town race out of it. I want to eventually do more, like CAI, upper/lowers, and x-pipe. Just didn't know if it was better to do those first, or if I would be pleased with a 3.73 alone for now.

3.73's is a perfect first mod to do. It will really waken your car up and depending on what gears you have in there now it should make a pretty big differnce in acceleration. Is your car a daily driver? Do you do lots of highway driving? etc.

if it is an auto, you might want to go with 4:10s, that is what i am doing to mine. people say that the automatics need a little more so go with the 4:10s. 3:73 are prolly good for you though, but i will need the extra ummph!

It is a aroung the town driver occ, other than that, it is in my garage. I have a dailiy driver and its not a highway car. Thats what I was hoping, that a new rear end in the stock car would give it some race around town, and i can add to it later. It is a 5speed also

so would you recomend 3.90 or 4.10 then. yeah, prob only drive it bout 3000 miles a year, only when its nice outside and feel like tearing it up.

so that will give it a lot more go off the line and mid throttle response? Anything that I need to do after I put either a 3.73 or 4.10 in to make it run ok or will it be fine just like that for now? What other mods would you recommend and in what order, cause I prob cant do them all at once.

Well, when doing the gears dont forget to get a good installation kit. Most people recommend the Ford Racing kit that cost like 100 bucks. Alot of installers recommend that kit because it comes with axle seals, axle bearings, etc. Also, dont forget about friction modifier.

After the gears you can start on your exhaust. A catback would do fine for now. You can also upgrade your MAF to a 73mm, ditch the air silencer (if you still have it), throw a K&N filter in there, bump the timing to 13-14*, MSD Cap & Rotor, eventually go with a nice manifold (trickflow, holly, etc.) with a 65mm throttle body. In between there you can work on your exhaust anytime.

And dont forget about subframe connectors... I just picked up a set of brand new Maximum Motorsports Xl series FL subframes for $75 bucks on craigslist.com

88BlueGT: What do subframes actually do, and are they good for the first few mods or should i hold out on them for awhile. I dont want to spend money if it isnt going to help on performance. Dont they just sturdy your car a little more?

And yes, subframes just stiffen everything up. To be totally honest, I just installed my Maximum Motorsports FL subframes last week. They are supposed to make my car 95% stiffer! I didnt feel a damn thing lol But they WILL help alot later on down the line.

Unless you're making enough power to torque the car up hard, which stock or very nearly stock doesn't, subframe connectors won't make a massive difference. Some, yes. Big, no. You will need them later on, though, and they are cheap.

^^ Extally. I could of waited a while but I rather get all of the welding crap, suspension out of the way so when it comes time to lay some power down I have everything.

just stuff some 4.10s in it put an exhaust on it and some sticky tires and go limiter launch it, it will be good for high 13s.
