I did a similar rebuild of my traclok a while back. Except instead of using an extra clutch pack, we just used the thickest shim in the rebuild kit. Made for getting all the gears back in a real pita but they are in there TIGHT. The rear would click/pop during turns initially, but went away with some driving.

Putting an extra clutch in there increases the friction surface area by 25%, overshimming it makes the geometry wrong so the clutch pack works harder initially so it wears out quicker. A better way to get that result is to use the F150 S-spring.

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the write up, it took me longer to do the writeup than it did to do the rebuild.

That will work, but one with a magnetic stand will be really useful.

Wow, that is very cool of you to take the time document this. I 2nd the vote for sticky. I wish i had this when I had to to work on an explorer rear end a few years ago. It took me like an hour to get those planetary gears lined up right.

Thanks again guys for the comments. It was fun to write up since I had all those nice pics. I'd like to see this get put up as a sticky or at least get put in the tech archive. Any moderators around??

Darrell??

The reason why the click and pop goes away is because you have sucessfully prematurely wore the clutch packs. You should have used an extra clutch pack. All that extra shim did was schedule the next rebuild alot sooner for you.

The "S" spring install part with the hose clamps is a great idea. I work at a dealership where I have all the "special" and usually useless tools for the job. But I love this idea Ryan came up with here.

Also you can buy the clutch pack kit from ford for the 05+ stangs they are carbon fiber. And You can use the "S" spring from an F150 instead of adding extra clutches to get a tighter pack.

I mentioned the F150 spring above, it basically results in the clutches wearing out faster, but will lock it up a bit better. Adding an extra clutch adds an additional 40% friction surface without the added wear. The carbon clutch set is definitely an upgrade as far as longevity, but is about twice as expensive. If it is in your budget, I say go for it, but you'll need two kits to put 4 clutches in it.
