Getting a mechanical water temp guage through the firewall

How is this possible on a Fox body? The hole where the other wires pass seems just too small. I got the nipple through but couldn't get that large nut through.

drill a new hole and put a new grommet in. step bits work well

I was actually going to just make the existing hole a bit larger, but was told it can fit through. How is this possible? I really don't want to cut the wires in the hole.

you mean you want to make the hole in the firewall bigger, or the hole in the existing grommet bigger? either way, you're headed for disaster. unless you're EXTREMELY careful in cutting a little more out of the existing grommet, you could get into some wire jackets and that aint gonna fly. i've run many wires through firewalls by taking a razor and cutting a little slit in the side of the grommet and running through that way. but, if you do that, make sure that you seal it up some how. my advice is, if you're having to really force it through a hole with existing wiring, make a new hole. just make sure you're clear on both sides. i recomend drilling from inside the car. you can usually find a good spot near the steering... shaft... thing. (techincal terms are not my strong suit) but just double and tripple check clearence in the engin compartment before drilling. also, like i mentioned before, a step bit, if you have one, is the best tool for this job. if you don't have one, you can pick one up at any hardware store for about 30-40 bucks. a lot for a single drill bit, i know. but they're very versitile. and you'll use it more than once. hope this helps. and, if anyone else has a better idea, by all means, tell him. i would stay away from drilling in hte firewall until you've exhausted all other options.

Just got around to doing this. Now, what did you guys use to seal it? When I put the mechanical guague in, it's leaking from the top fitting when I start the car.
