Question

Edelbrock Carb Problems!?!?!?

Alright I have an edelbrock 750 on my 5.0 and its just not working right. I cranks pumps fuel in and it sometimes will start and sometimes it won't. I've messed with the timing, adjusted the idle air screws to the best of my knowledge. Most the time when it starts it will back fire or run for a few seconds and die. I've had it running for a little bit once and checked the fuel pressure and its right at 6.5psi. Also the #3&7 header tube on each side was glowing red, I don't think it was running lean but the timing was too retarded.

I had a holley 600 on it before and it ran fine until fuel started leaking into the carb somewhere from the secondary bowl. I took it off because it was leaning out at the top end. So, I don't think anything internally was messed up since it was running off the holley.

glowing headers = unburned fuel...could be rich or it could be not enough timing.

If you timing is off it is hard to set up a carb. If you can get it running for a minute, set the timing. Then start worrying about the carb.

We had the thing running for a little while and it was idling fine then I went to put a timing light on it and before I could it died and wouldn't start back up and stay running.

First thing is to check to make sure you are still getting fuel and spark. If yes, mark your current dist. position and turn the distributor slightly clockwise 1/32" or so and try to start again. If no start, turn some more. If still nothing after a few trys go the opposite direction. Eventually you should find timing that it will run long enough at to set the timing.
