What Should I Do To My 88LX?First of all I just wanted to say this forum has already given me some good ideas about what I want to do and there seem to be many knowledgeable people onboard. Anyways I have a few questions. She’s an auto so I was thinking of swapping a T5 into her over the winter and wanted to know if it was practical and wallet friendly. Secondly if you don’t think a t5 swap is practical then what do you propose I do for a few extra ponies. I have 1400$CDN to spend so it was either t5 swap or a bunch of boltons (throttle body, ram air, 373’s, exhaust, ect.) Heres some pics ![]() ![]() 1988,lx,5.0,auto,175,000kilometers, No rust, completely stock |

Clean car man, how many miles are on it. If you dont want to do a swap, just get a Transgo shift kit, 2000-2600 torque converter, and 4:10 gears. those three will help out alot. i have the shift kit and the tc, soon to have the gears, but none of them are installed yet. i need to find a place to do it cheap, or i my dad is going to have to do it. anyway, i have heard that alot of people love what their auto will do after just those three mods. But a 5 speed is alot more fun.

hey thanks alot man!
theres around 175,000 km on it so about 108,500 miles? Shift kit hey. I hear you can set the shift points and everything. Havnt really considered this but really should if I dont end up doing the t5 swap. Im not sure if I would want to go 4.10 because of gas (shaddup its expsnsive here in canada! ) thanks for the info tho, good luck with your sttang!!

yeah, me and my friends went to toronto and montreal over spring break and the liters of gas confused the hell out of us. and the signs in Km was awesome. we felt cool when the speed limit was 110-130. HAHA...If you are going to just spend your money on a t5, dont waste the money on the automaic. Either save for the t5 or mod the car now. Get a trickflow top end kit(heads, intake, cam, etc...) i have both a t5 and an AOD, and i didnt want to t5s, so i am building the automatic to perform like a manual. I really enjoy having both cars, and automatics aren't as boring as people say. Have fun with your project though and good luck.

5.0s love N20. I am amazed at the shots they will take and come back for more. I will be adding a Fox to my stable sometime soon. Congrats on your acquisition.

To be totally honest I would keep the AOD. And IMO dont even bother with a shift kit, just get a street/strip valve body from Performance Automatic, Lentech, etc. That will allow you to manually hold each gears OR just put it in third and let it shift itself. Also, as for a TC I wouldnt go any less than 2800. I know many people who have done TC's and most dont even feel a difference if its not a 2800 or higher. I did a 2800 in my 88 and felt nothing. I would call up Edge Racing for a custom coverter. That will also leave you some extra cash if you install the VB and TC yourself. The TC will be about 500 and the VB is about 250 (approx.). Im not familar with canadian money though... anyway. After that, go with a set of 3.90 gears. You will be VERY happy with that setup.
