ok Dumb question and i know it cant be answered very accurately but.... i have a 89 gt with a fenderwellcai off road h pipe and 40s everything is new plugs wires coil ect... any idea how much that it adds cause u cant really go by the advertisement. and do gears (373s) make a defferance in rwhp ? pretty sure thats also a stupid question but i like to know lol
and the gearing in the rearend has nothing to do with horsepower. You simply have a reduced gear ratio meaning you will accelerate faster, but have less top end speed.
Not mentioning the 3.73's as the gear are lower so you really have quicker accelaration that "hp" because it's just gears. Also keep in mind just because you have a lower gear "3.73's" does not mean you gained any on top end. If you have a 5 speed you should be around 2,700rpm highway. I know my 4.10's on a 3 speed on highway at 70mph was 3,100-3,200.
But you sure make that up at the low end though. You say "everything is new, coil, plug ect..." Explain the stuff you left out, you could have more than what you're explaining.
So actually a higher ration rear gear does increase the torque to the wheels.
When you get your car dynoed, they correct for the gearing of the car. Your gears, in the transmission and rear end multiply torque from the flywheel to the wheels. That is why gear changes let you accelerate faster.
You mean (lower) ratio gear. Higher would be a decrease (3.73's - 3.08) as for "lower" ratio of course would be (3.73's - 4.10's).
