Who the hell are you
![]() ![]() ![]() Yeah I read the thread, he has asked multiple times how much gas mileage will be...with that concern, a 4 cyl swap is best. ![]() ![]()

go for the 460 (only because i did)
i have one for sale if interested $350.00 needs cam mine is 550 hp and i would guess 8 mpg? also the 460 is 150 lbs heavier than small block i believe. also with the high rise intake you'll have hood clearance issues unless you can sit it in lower..i have a 5 inch cowl and it barely fits with the victor 460 intake. engine for sale ![]() still work in progress.

yea i think 18 mpg with a 351w with a carb is way on the optimistic side. I haven't tested it per-say, but if you drive it like you stole it (like I tend to with my 302) it gets a lot less than that. And what's the fun in having a fun car if you don't drive the shit out of it?

im still confused as to why mpg keeps coming up so much... id bet money even with the 351 and a big ass carb you drive it decently hard dont expect over 10mpg

I dunno everyone else keeps talking about it.
I'd do the 351w on a budget though, cheaper parts, wider availability. In the long run it'll be cheaper, and on a poor college student budget that's good heh.

I'm building a car from the ground up now and I made the decision to go with a small block 351w. I know the lure of a big block is great, but everything gets WAY more expensive..... Trust me when I tell you there are sooooooooo many things that are gonna cost you money that you havn't thought of yet lol

351W is my choice. I would only do the 460 if I had a bigger budget than you have and my main goal was to do something different. You rarely see this done(That's why parts are expensive). Otherwise you could make great power with the 351 with more aftermarket support.
Realy I see little advantage to a BB Ford in this situation. Plus someday out of college you could put a 427ci stroker kit in it (and any other parts you want because there are so many for small blocks) with whatever you have on there now. And still have all the aftermarket support. !HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO! YUM

Hey thanks for all the info. A lot of you make very valid points for the 351 but as for expensiveness i think you may be wrong. A slightly modified big block makes probably around 400 horse and around 475 ftlbs if not more. I know that i need to buy the motor mounts and the rear sump oil pan and dipstick but i need to buy all the same stuff for the 351 any way. I actually already started buying parts for the 460 a while ago but never really did anything with them. i have a set of cast iron C8VE heads that have bigger valves 2.19/1.76 and bought a comp cams K kit with a 252/261 cam that has
.460/.485 inches of lift. I know that this cam is basically stock, but that the beauty of a big block, the power is already there. And prices are very comparable to that of a 351. A performer intake from edelbrock is $196 for a 351 and $203 for a 460. There are also plenty of parts available for big blocks from pistons to roots chargers. Some one wrote before that not many people do a big block swap and that is part of the reason why I think every one is saying to do a 351. I know the extra wieght up front is going to decrease the handling of the car, but im not going to be auto crossing it. I'm just saying that the BBF needs to get some respect and if you look around the parts are there. I will deffinetly take into acount all of your points and ill let you know about my decision. Feel free to keep posting if you have any information that you think i might find useful. Thanks again this forum ROCKS!!!

i really dont know a whole lot about it as it came with my car when i purchased it.
it had a 550 lift cam but the cam does have at least one worn lobe. it did run when pulled but it poped through the carb as the exhaust cam lobe is shot. was told it was just rebuilt but you know how that goes? but it did run good before the cam went. he prob didnt break in the cam properly? i would guess the motor made around 400 - 425 horse? but like i said i basicly dont know a whole lot about it and i am not an engine builder thats for sure. i had my other 460 prof. built. |

a 351 would be the best for a budget motor.

a 351 swap makes the most sense but i would have to spend a lot of money on the motor and i still have to but a trans. a 460 with stock heads and a performer intake a holley carb and a mild cam can easily put out 400+ HP not to mention the torque. Edelbrock's alluminum heads are around 1200 dollars per pair the heads that i bought for the 460 were 60 bucks on ebay got them cleaned and installed the valves and rockers for less than $500

I love digging up old threads, pretty impressive stock rating
460 Produced from 1968 to 1996. Available in Ford, Mercury and Lincoln. Same as 429, but with longer stroke. (3.85 inch) During its earlier years, pre 1973, horsepower was rated at 365. After 1972 horsepower ranged from 208 to 275. Intake/exhaust valves are 2.08/1.66 Intake/exhaust valves for the Police Interceptor 460 heads (from 1973-'74) measure 2.19/1.66 |
