Clutches

I was thinking that after I get my car running right, the 1st thing that I wanted to do was replace the clutch. I like a stiff, hard to push and hold down clutch, what I wanted to know was who uses what, and on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the hardest how hard is it to push in and hold.

Thanks again guys.
The ever most annoying,
Greg

If youre going to race it or put lots of miles on it, you might end up regreting a "stiff" clutch. You will get tired of trying to stage with it or you will be wore out after a good city commute. Just my $.02.

For most 10.5" clutches I like the King Cobra, its cheap and holds strong to 400hp

King Cobra is made by Valeo and a quality clutch, Valeo makes all Fords stock clutches. I had one on my last motor puting 500 to the wheels. I also have one in my daily driver. Works great.
Remember its not a race clutch, no slicks!

yes, I agree. King Cobra clutch is probably best for what you want. It holds good and not to stiff to push down. Living in Tidewater, you don't want a stiff clutch on a daily driver. Now with that said, if a lot more power is being planned, take a look at Spec clutches. Also, stay away from the dual disc clutches, huh Mike?????

A friend of mine has the King Cobra Clutch along with a MM quadrant on his 93 GT. Feels great. I recommend reusing the stock cable.

depends on the power level of the engine, launch rpm, etc. personally, ever Ram clutch I have ever installed would shake your teeth out upon engagement unless you side-stepped them.

As for the dual disc clutch, they are a pain in the ass to get to release and engage properly and smoothly. You have to measure the clearance between the discs and the plate and flywheel w/ the clutch pedal pushed in and shim accordingly to get the clearances needed for smooth, noise-free operation, throw a Lakewood sfi bell into the mix and it's impossible to do as well as it's another pita getting the clutch pivot height correctly w/o killing the release bearing or hitting the pressure plate while the eng is running. For the icing on the cake, throw all this in a cobra with long-tubes which requires the rt side header to have to be removed along w/ the starter in order to remove the bell and trans and by now, you should be getting the picture. Mike's problem was slightly different in that all this stuff was never meant to be put in a fox-body.
