Timing

I had one of my buddies dads set my timing and obviously he did something all wrong. The car does not run stronger at all , it doesnt pull as hard and i cant even take it up past 4 grand. Could this have something to do with the timing? He also cleaned the throttle body and a few other things. If it is the timing is it hard to fix? Any info on this would help out a bunch

Did he pull the spout connector out when he set the timing?

definately sounds like an ignition issue. Darrel said the first thing I would look at.

I would start by changing the timeing back to were it was. Here is good lesson for you though. Only change on thing at a time. Then see if there is any improvement. Then change something else and so on and so on.

I have 84 .... no computer ..... so perhaps someone can correct me on this but doesn't your computer compensate if your timing is off. In other words you can't change your timing unless with out fooling your computer first. It might not be for you year car but for the newer cars that is how it works.

For instance on my 84 I can advance my timing, 15 degrees is what I run at.
On newer cars the computer thinks your going down the highway and is compensating by making you run too rich or lean what ever the case may be.
But like I said I am not sure what year computers started doing that.

I'm not sure what all he did, I just let him keep it while I was at work. All he told me is that he changed the timing, cleaned my intake and throttle body and cleaned the idle control motor.

There should be marks were the factory set the distributor. If not.

Well what you can do until you have a mechanic look at is take piece of chalk and mark the distibutor and mark the intake or block which ever is easier.

Then start your car Then move the distributor to the left .... it will start running ruff. Then move it to the right ... again it will start running ruff. In the middle is were it will run best. Not get good gas mileage but run best. If that does not it help set it back to were you have it marked.

DO NOT ADVANCE THE TIMING TO MUCH.

You know you did this when you try to start it. "when turning it over the engine will stop or hesitate for a micro second. and then start.

Before you do any of this google," setting the timing in mustang ( year )"

Also look for leaks and any hosing disconnected.

One step at a time
Have a good day

too ruff is detonation. dont keep it there for long because it can really screw up your motor. I agree with what everyone else is saying. If it running rough, i would put it back to where it is supposed to be. 10* i think

13 is a good base to start with. Take it to 13 and see if it detonates. If it does, take it back a degree every try and keep seeing if it stops detonating. If it does not detonate and 13, bump it up to 14 and see if it does. Atleast thats how I do it.
