Ring And Pinion Question

just curiouse as to what causes what

what will cause you ring and pinion to "whine" and what cases it to "knock"

the whine would be bad install (shims)
the knock would probably be bad bearings or clutch packs in the diff

ok heres one, you know those u shaped "clamps" that you tighten down onto the bearings, theres one on each side of the carrier assembly. say if those back off, would that cause the "knock"?

everything in the rear end must be with in spec or it will make noise
