GT40 / GT40p Questions
im going to the junkyard tomarrow morning, i just have a few qyestions.
what are the the years for these heads? 97 explorers and up? do they have the same header pattern as stock mustang pattern? what are the markings fir gt-40's? is there any way that i can tell if they are still good? |

Not sure about the years for the Exploders. The GT40's are iron and have 3 lines on the front of them. The GT40p's are aluminum I believe, and have a gtp stamped on it. The GT40p's supposedly need "p" specific headers, but I have heard of people getting around that with shorties. I think I remember a thread once where a guy cut down a sparkplug socket and used a wrench to turn it so he didn't have to take off the header to change the plug. he used the end off a coil wire because the plug boot wouldn't fit under the header on the #3 plug. Neither are anywhere near as good as aftermarket heads, but I guess they are cheaper.

the p heads have 4 bars on the front and are labled gt-40p I belive or gtp. Either are decent stock heads. BOTH are Iron. ps are on 97 or 98 and newer explorers. I'd try offering a few bucks less than what they want, many places will do that if you are pulling them yourself. The closest yard to me pulls all the newer engines so I couldn't find any to pull myself. Good luck.

oh, I forgot, if there is an intake still on one grab that too. I belive it's the same as a cobra intake and will help performance for a lot less than buying one new.
Actualy, if you are thinking of rebuilding your bottom end you could always pick up the whole explorer engine and just rebuild that and do a quick swap when it's done.

take off the valve cover and it will say gt40p stamped on the head and they are not aluminum. Gt40 head came on 96 and early 97 explorers with 5.0's and late 97 to 01 have the p's. I have a set of p's on my car now and love them. I have a auto car and its been 13.06 on junk street tires so far. they work good.

What Junk yard did you go to? A1? I know of a few more. Have you looked on Craigslist...? I believe there is a ad on craigslist right now.

Did you go to A1? There is a few junk yards out east off of Hwy 94. BUT, I bet you wont find what you are looking for. I know of a pull and save up in Denver. Not sure of the name. It might even be Pull in Save.
It's Gt40 heads you are looking for right???? Here is a link to some GT40 heads on Craigslist for sale... Mustang parts

Yeah, no doubt. Yeah, google pick and pulls in Denver. If You don't come up with anything I'll make a call for ya to a friend that lives up there and find out exactly what the name and where it is.
