Yes converts are the heaviest. Go with 4.10 gears, shift kit (or valve body), and a stall converter if you really want to feel a difference. The gears would definetly be first on my list. I like my Transgo shift kit alot. Lentech makes a good one you should check out. Either one would make a big difference on your car. I personally have not checked into stall converters but I definetly think I will have one sometime in the future. Most people will say convert to a t5 but thats not your question.

Hey man I’m in the same boat as you. I have an 88LX that’s auto and naturally crave a bit more get up and go so I wanted to convert to a t5, but I think it’s going to be too expensive…I think I’m going to do gears and a torque converter.

For gears nothing less than 3.73 and 2800 stall torque convert.

Heres an interesting article for you to read.

good luck with your proj!

Gears are a must. As for the trans, I'd recommend a performance overhaul with red alto clutches and kolene steels, a kevlar od band, a mechanical diode intermediate clutch drum, a transgo shift kit and a converter from Edge.

been researching the AOD stuff for a friend, and it seems that most people like the Baumann shift kit alot. transgo gets mixed reviews, and B&M gets nothing but bad reviews. my2cents

I have used all 3 and have had good results with all of them. They each have their pros and cons. A lot of the shift quality has to do with how the rest of the trans is assembled and it's overall condition.

STICK WITH 3.73 FOR YOUR AOD...IF THE TRANS HAS TOO MANY MILES ON IT..REBUILT IT, PUT A TRANS COOLER, IN MY OPINION EITHER DO THE SHIFT KIT, OR STALL CONVERTER ABOUT 2500-2800 RANGE BUT NOT BOTH. I WOULD DO A CONVERTER INSTEAD... BUT THE SHIFT KIT FROM TRANSGO IS AWESOME...GOODLUCK...

When it comes to Mustang info listen to this man! I've known him a few years now and he will never steer you wrong. He put in a set of 3.73s for me on my 89 and it made a world of difference, but I would go 4.10 with an AOD. I got the 3.73s at a good price which is why I got them.

Hey man, I'm just like you having a mustang with an auto tranny. Chris,
Zak and Tony suggested first to go with FRPP 4.10 Gears...

I've already made my order for the throttle, cold air intake, shift kit and FRPP 4.10 gears

you can see the topic.

I hope it would help you.

regards,

Sam
