I did mine and it took me a few tries to get it right, mostly becuase I didn't have a dial indicator until this last try, Did you leave the stock shim on the pinion? Check all of your loads, make sure you crush the sleeve, get the right load on the pinion and when you shim the carrier just make sure its a tight fit to get that carrier in there, that way it loads the carrier bearings. I know I just wrote a novel but if you got ne more questions about this just pm me, I got real good at it doin mine

also i should have mentioned that the gears were used out of a 98 explorer from a local auto parts store, thought ide save a little cash, but i did end up using same shims on pinion and carrier, checked backlash and it was .010-.011 i re used old bearing but got a new crush and SOB those things are hard to tighten up, how important is the drag on the pinion i know its suppose to be 16-26 or somethin in/lbs but i just kinda felt it by hand

Your talking about preload on the pinion? The number sounds high and yea what I did was just tourqe mine down and as I tightened it I would spin the carrier in the housing to make sure it didn't get to tight,
. You want it to spin but stop kinda firmly after like a good rotation and a half or so |

setting up used gears in a different housing typically causes the gear set to run a different wear pattern, and inevitably always make noise
