How to set timing on carbed?

i know that on a fuel injected, you unplug the little plug to adjust the timing, but how is it done on a carbed. I tried last night, but the timing didn't really change when I was turning the distributor. I think that I am 180 out because I am getting some backfire. Thanks,

Take the vac advance hose off of the dist. and plug the end to set base timing. Did you have the dist out? I thought all you did was change the fuel filter.

That's all i did at first. I was told that the timing could be the only thing causing the backfire. I put a new Holley 650 on, but I still had the same problems. This one is supposed to have a in-line fuel filter, would this happen without that filter in?

No. The filter won't make any difference in that situation

^ Agreed. But if the float is stuck open, fuel will be pouring out of the bowl vent tubes

I got to TDC (or least I think), dropped the dizzy back in, and it runs better, but it still cuts out and then starts popping (backfire?) after about a minute. Is this the carb needing adjusting, or what?

If your timing is correct and it is still backfiring it might be your shooters. As soon as you touch your accelerator your shooter need to squirt fuel into the carb or you may get some backfireing.

Also if you are one tooth off that will cause some problems too.

Are all of the vacuum lines connected? No vacuum leaks?

I realized that I kinked the fuel line a little when I took the fuel filter out...could this be some of my problem?
