Trans question.

Hey guys, I am sure this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to figure out how to work the search function. Anyways, I was driving to work this morning, I had just gotten in the car, so it was cold, and the first few minutes, the trans kept popping out of gear. After it was warmed up i would be cruising around 60-65 and it popped out of 5th a couple times. Any info would be useful. Thanks guys!

Anyway itll need a rebuild to fix it most likely. or just dont use 5th gear for now....

could be a bent fork or a badly worn gear.
it is proly poping out when u let off the throttle isnt it?

with a bent shift fork though wouldnt you think it would pop out of higher torque gears then 5th or does it work the other way around, and itll pop out of lower torque gears easier....

Yeah, in 5th, I have an after market shifter, I am hoping it might need some adjustment.

Could be your shift stops are not set right. Could also be bent shift forks.

i wouldnt think an adjustment will fix it, and the shift fork is inside the trans bellhousing. sounds like shes going to need a little work to fix it. shouldnt have to worry about driving on it if it still clutches and shifts ok in the other gears...good luck man...

Yeah, the clutch is good, and shifting is fine, we'll see, i just bought the damn thing and replaced the fuel pump in it this past weekend, oh well.

do you have an oil leak. when 5th gear starts popping out it could be that it starved for oil. 5th sets highest in the case so if the fluid level is low it could be that. I had the problem in a VW i was working on and all it was, was the fluid. at least worth a check>

the gears could be chipped..if it shifts fine than its not synchros..i know i broke off a couple teeth on my reverse gear and it pops out every time the gear makes a full rotation..

if u have an aftermarket stop screw shifter not adjusted properly it will deffinatle do that..

as far as the fork goes.. fifth gear has its own fork so that is why i tought it could be that but 5th gear is not a common fork to bend. i would check the adjustment on the shifter first and get back to us

fifth gear sits lower than any gears in the transmission...the actual syncroed gear is anyway the drive part attached to the chaft doesnt matter the oil will follwo the gear up to that.

try everything though it is only gonna get worse so fix it while u can..
