93 octane ratings.... ryans88gt????

Quick one here
93 octane achieved with "up to 10% ethanol" or 93 exon without? which one is better for a higher compression gas guzzler like mine? I dont care about saving 7 cents on the gallon, just want my fuel to be what it should...

The ethanol content just helps to keep the burn clean. 93 octane without the ethanol is just as good. Both will give you the results.

Gasoline with ethynol has more oxygen in it. It won't matter with a fuel injected computer run car but if you have a carb it will run slightly leaner. I have a carb and when I jet my carb for one type of fuel I will need to stick with it.

i've seen much better fuel mileage with non formulated fuels(no ethanol). as far as power IDK.

I don't know about all that...but

octane rating is a rating of how fast the fuel burns in relation to octane. The higher the number the slower the fuel burns and thus the less likely it is to detonate. So 93 octane fuel with or without ethanol has the same detonation suppression character.

The difference is the 10% ethanol fuel has slightly lower energy density since ethanol contains less energy than gasoline. But the difference with only 10% ethanol is going to be like 3% less energy or something like that, so you are not going to notice it. Also the 10% ethanol will help the gasoline burn cleaner. All fuel in illinois has 10% ethanol in it, so I can't really experiment with the difference.

i just did an hour long presentation on e85 ethanol, it decreases fuel efficiency 20-45% and thats including gm's super flex fuel cars, and as for the energy produced from each, the ethanol is pathetic compared to gasoline and diesel

this is information from the NCPA

and is measured BTU's (energy) per gallon

diesel - 140,000

gasoline - 116,000

ethanol - 75,000

So for 10% ethanol...

116,000 * 90% + 75,000 * 10% = 111,900 BTUs which is 96.5% of the same energy as straight gasoline

actually im prety sure that its federal law that ALL gasoline in the united states must contain up to 10% ethanol... you should see those stickers at every gas station

I don't know if that is true....
according to wikipedia, the only states REQUIRED to contain at least 10% are Minnesota and Connecticut. It also states that about 1/2 the gas sold in the US contains ethanol.

Common ethanol fuel mixtures - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the only gas station I know of that still has gasoline without ethanol in south/ central Illinois is Casey's General store. The 87 octane has no ethanol sticker on the pump, where the 89 octane does.

It is controlled by the states, there is something like 150 different formulations of gasoline sold across the US. This is one reason that gas prices are as high as they are.
