Get an MSD part number 8582. It comes with extra springs and weights to curve the mechanical advance to your liking. Good stuff.

I've run that distributor many times. MSD makes good stuff.

Thanks for the compliments on the car!

yeah i have been told that the msd had problems being machined to be a tight fit and would break the pin on the gear just on the small blocks. i take it that you havn't had any trouble with them..do they come with a bronze gear or a steel one?

The problem with them is actually the retaining ring on the oil pump shaft. The MSD distributor has a slighty longer shaft which makes the gear hit the retaining ring on some engines. All you have to do is drive the ring down with a socket, extension and hammer.

As mentioned, MSD is the best, but a bit costly..

If that is an issue, you can get a Ford Duraspark II with a module.. check out this great website that tells you everything you need to know:

Jason Fletchers EFI Mustang to Carb. Conversion Tech

or you can get what I bought for my next project: a Summit Racing HEI (GM) style Mustang distributor that's got a vacuum advance & steel gears, and comes with the coil on top so you wont need any ignitions modules or anything else -just bolts it on-, for only $188:

Summit Blueprinted HEI Distributor

I still havent tried that but I cant see why not -the 6AL ignition box will be hooked up to the HEI coil instead of a HVC coil- unless Darrell has an experience with it, I'm sure he does..

You can use an MSD ignition with anything.
