Oil pressure problem

Hey guys! I noticed in the last couple of weeks that the stock gauge in my car is reading low. It is on the first or second notch. It flucuates alot, one minute it is really low and 5 min later it will say normal at times and the needle will be in the middle. Anyone no why it could be reading so low? My car has 177,000 mi on it so i would not be surprised if everything is fine and it's just the guage not reading it right. Any suggestions to what it might be?

thanks!

is this fluctuation (sp?) at idle or is it when you are driving the car?

it should move while driving the harder you accelerate it goes up and at idle it should go down

Mine does that too, i think its stock gauge acting up rather than actual oil pressure problem. But you can never be sure before measuring the actual oil pressure. I'm too lazy to do that, because it stays in the "normal" range.

Stock gauges aren't very accurate. The only way to check your oil pressure accurately is to hook up a good gauge that reads pressure in pounds.

Yeah i'm planning on getting some new gauges in may car. Wasn't on the top of my list but will get them sometime soon. I just wanted to make sure i was not going to have any serious problems. I have plenty of oil in my car but have a leak in the rear main seal that is minor...leaks pretty slow. When i get my new crate motor i will not have to worry about it...i am not rebuilding the 347 like i originally wanted to do.

check your oil level?

Double check.

Buy a new sending unit at autozone if the oil level is good, it will most likely fix the problem.
