stalling in gear

I just got my windsor motor running and took it for a spin.. seems to idle and run fine (idles a bit high 900-1000rpm's). only thing is it stalls when I come to a stop sign or stop in gear. if I put it in neutral or park it continues to idle alright just a little high.. anybody have any ideas?

alright so I got the carb tuned fairly well.. however while adjusting the timing I noticed what sounds like a knock.. one problem is that the timing pointer doesn't line up correctly so i've just been trying to go by where the motor runs the best.. This motor is holding great oil pressure (45-50lbs at idle). I can't think of what else to adjust..Also the fuel has been sitting for a while and I thought that could be part of the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd fix that timing pointer. The proper way would be to pull the front cover, line up the timing marks on the cam and crank gear, reassemble the front end without turning the crank and then adjust your timing pointer accordingly. With the cam and crank dots lined up the timing pointer should point at zero. Then you know everything is indexed. Trying to set the timing by sound or where you think the engine runs the best is almost impossible. Seen it many times on a dyno. Its just too hard to get close without a timing light.
