Removing GT side skirts
Hey guys i bought a project car a little bit ago and was woundering if there is a trick or anything to getting off the side skirts for painting and body work? There is a possibility they will go back on but not sure yet. I was thinking about replacing the "side skirts" b/c they have started to get the little waves in them if you know what i mean and arnt as flush and connected smoothly to the car like they used to be. I saw that the rear scoops ( the ones on the side skirts but just behind the door, but before the rear wheel well ) actually look to be a peice themselves is that true? Anyone know if the rear side skirt scoops are apart in there own and can i just replace the side skirt and re-use those scoops?
I havent touched anything yet in fear of F'in it up so i though i would ask you guys 1st. So anything helps as always, thanks guys! - The Novice. |

Take the screws off and they pop off. There is a metal rivitted in strip that is on the rocker panel that usually rusts away since they are uncoated from the factory. This is what holds it flush to the body. You can replace those metal strips and that usually fixes the wavyness. 5.0 resto sells them. The rear piece is indeed a separate piece .

Ok, im a little confused. Is there anyway you could link what i might need from 5.0Resto by chance? And do i have to take off the inside door panel to get at those screws or anything? Or are they under the car? Finally If those scoops are seperate, do the just snap on and off of the side skirts? And/or only when the side skirts are off can i get them on and off. Or are there any tricks to getting those off or are they pritty easy to get on and off? So sorry im just slightly confused, if ya can link what i need from that website that would really help, thanks!

The screws are in the wheel wells (front and rear) and under the car (maybe 8 screws into the floor pan). the rest is just a big metal clip that holds it flush against the body. The scoopy piece will unclip after you take the screws out of the rear wheel well and from under the car. It uses similar clips but they are smaller.
That big metal clip is the part that usually rusts away and can be replaced. 87-93 RETAINING BRACKET, ROCKER MOLDING, GT MUSTANG

The skirts push down into the big metal clips. To remove the skirts after all of the screws are out, CAREFULLY lift upward to release the skirts. Sometimes they stick pretty well because crap gets stuck down in the metal retainer. DO NOT pull straight out from the body, you will rip the skirt.
