if its orig its a 7.5 ...8.8 came out in latter 85 and 86... i had a 7.5 with 345 gears held up nice,but usually wont to a huge amount of power..

i got a 7.5 in my 83 lx and ive heard the most common things that go wrong with them is the axel tubes bend. and thats no good. im switching to an 8.8 out of my 86 gt parts car

i had 380 fly hp and a 345 7.5 rear once wasnt peddle happe but ocassionally took off..lasted 3 years..i put good gear fluid in it..changed it regularly//yes my axel finally bent ...swapped a 8.8 axel in it...then latter swaped a 8.8

I broke mine powershifting into second with my stock 85 GT. It sheared all the teeth off of the pinion, 14 teeth off of the ring, busted the carrier and broke both main caps.

powershifting is fun but not good on a weak rear lol..i never power shift even with new perf rear..
