Heavy clutch
I recently bought my 92 GT from a guy who had begun to beef up the car but lost interest. He installed a Tremec 3550 tranny, and Tremec short shifter, and a new clutch. He said the clutch is a King Cobra and the pressure plate is Centerforce (or vice versa, I can't remember right now). The clutch pedal is extremely heavy. Much heavier than any car I've ever been in including many Mustangs. The guy said it is because of the particular comination of pressure plate and clutch disc. If I wanted it lighter, I would have to replace one or the other to be a brand match. Does this make sense to anyone? Is the linkage wrong, maybe? I don't mind the heavy clutch, but it gets tiresome in town, and my wife can't work it well. Other than the heaviness, it operates beautifully and hooks up perfect.

The only way to fix it is to change the pressure plate to something else. However, I've had a few Centerforce clutches in my day, and none of them have ever really been that heavy. Check and make sure the clutch cable isn't binding on something, or if it's old, it could be hanging up inside the casing. Now would be a good time to change to an adjustable cable and quadrant, with a firewall adjuster. Check on ebay for them, people sell them pretty cheap for the whole kit.

If the cable was binding up, I would probably notice that the clutch wouldn't have a smooth engagement. It works great.
Most times I've seen people say that their Centerforce clutch isn't any heavier than stock, but maybe it was just the clutch and not the pressure plate...?? I drove an 89 GT with King Cobra setup and it was about like stock. I've never adjusted or fixed anything with a clutch before. How would an adjustable cable reduce the weight of the pedal?

The King Cobra disk is just a stock disk. Many aftermarket clutchs are an upgraded pressure plate and a stock disk. It's unlikely that there is something wrong with the clutch itself and it's just an old cable, or it's binding somewhere. It would still engage smoothly, because the clutch does pull pretty hard on the cable, and in return you have to push pretty hard on the pedal.
The adjustable cable is just a good idea and you should have one with a firewall adjuster anyway. But I'm willing to bet your problem is the cable. EDIT: In thinking about this, I had a motorcycle a while back that the clutch was really heavy on. I shot some WD40 down into the casing of the cable and it solved the problem. |

That's a good point about lubing the clutch cable. That's pretty routine stuff on a motorcycle, so I'm sure its a good idea on a car too.
The clutch suppedly only has a few thousand miles on it, so I wonder why someone wouldn't take care of the cable at the same time... Thanks for the info. Its going bye bye into storage for a while, and I can't drive it anyway, so I'll have to wait to fix her.
