Car Dies If It Is Too Hot Out - Ignition Module?
I have an 88 gt with 3.73 gears aod w a single flex fan. when it is 75deg and up if I go 65 mph for about 30min and then get stuck in a traffic jam the car just dies on me. I made the mistake the first time and called a tow truck to take it to the mechanic and abra kadabra the car started the next morning (nice and cold) before this happend I had him bump the timing up a little bit but not much. he said it might be the ignition module so I replaced that with one from autozone and it still dies after a while. he said if I replaced the ignition module myself then there was a chance that I messed with the timing and made it run a little hotter. should I buy a more expensive distributor like from msd or accel? I know someone else had to of had this problem.

Is it a spark problem? Have you checked for fire while the car isn't running? It could be the ignition module, getting hot and acting up is the beginning signs of one going out - though it could be other problems. They're fairly inexpensive, maybe $30 I'm guessing... you could always buy it and see if it fixes it.

mabey I should go with a more expensive one like in the picture. I havent had a chace to check for spark because I am usually alone when I break down. and only 2 hands its hard to hit the coil and check spark

Fuel pumps in these years were also famous for dying when hot or with low fuel in the tank so it couldn't stay cool enough. Then miraculously come back to life. Listen for the momentary running of the pump when you first flip on the ignition switch right after it dies.

is that the relay by the computer behind the passenger kick panel? I saw a relay that looked like it was just hanging out and plugged into a couple of wires. I thought it was an odd place to put it. why not have all fuses and relays close together. would'nt it be cool to have them right in the center under the arm rest?

Can you verify that you are or are not getting spark when this happens? Is the fuel pump priming (ie) can you hear it buzz when you click the key? Could possibly be the PIP in the dizzy If you already replaced the TFi I would look their. Have the TFI you installed tested to seeif its any good. good luck

I had the same problem. Replaced the coil, and it hasn't died yet.

I really really wish I knew about this 10 years ago when I had my 5.0 had the same thing happend, stalled at a toll, rolled to the side of the road. I did get lucky and a tow truck, drove by picked me up....didn't have to pay for towing just one night storage, it wasn't that bad to be honest, but if I knew all I had to do was cool it off!! I would have then continued on my way.

Fuel relay was under the drivers seat on my 86 gt, probably same place as yours.

Fuel relay is under the drivers seat on that car. Next time the car is hot, turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to come on for a second or two. If it doesn't, under the hood is the ECC jumper plug. Stick a wire in the bottom right slot in the plug. (I think it's bottom right) Ground the other end of the wire. Flip the key on. That should make the fuel pump run as long as the key is on. If you don't hear the pump...Then it's probably bad.
