Do You Need To Run A Bigger Alternator With U/D Pullies?
I had this problem when i first put my pullies on my car. it was a little hesitant to start. now i havent driven the car in about a week and the thing wont even turn over. what could be the problem?
Not really for sure, but maybe i left something on, but my headlights were not on. I dont know the problem but it wouldnt start as soon as i put them on either. then it ran everytime. now back to not running. I am getting a jump in 20 mins, hope that helps. |

Re: do you need to run a bigger altenator with u/d/pullies?
What do you mean hesitant to start, and what do you mean would not start? Did it turn over at all? How many otions do you have? Large amp? Fog Lamps. Ohms Law Voltage = current X Resistance :-) Have you had the Alt checked at a repair shop? Not a parts store, but a repair shop please

If you've got a big stereo system or other electronics, and do alot of sitting at stoplights, you may have a problem. Other than that, you should be fine. When driving, there really won't be a difference in battery charging over the stock pulleys.

Underdrive pullies are not the cause. You need to check for a draw in the system. You could also have a bad alternator or battery.

load test the batt AND test the alternator for its output. SHould be no less than 15% of its rated output. Internally shorted or weak batts are good trroblemakers for frying alternators, so be sure to ck both

my car was doing the same thing for a while it would start hard or if i let it sit for a couple days it would be completely dead. for weeks i couldnt figure out what it was, and then one night a buddy and me were sitting in it while it was shut off, with the doors closed wondering what could cause it, and we noticed a glowing from the visors, pulled them down and the plastic cover that goes over the mirror wasnt pushing the switch in for the mirror light, so both mirrors were staying on all the time, and as soon as i took care of those i havnt had a problem since.

just so you know i went to the junk yard and upgraded my altenator from the factory 70 amp to a 130 amp for like $25 all you have to do is get a altenator of a 3.0 liter taurus and shave a little off your alt bracket.

A bigger alternator can't hurt but an easy solution is to get a smaller pulley for the alternator to compensate for the underdrive pulleys.
