Gauges
need to know what to look for as far as which gauges will work. i don't know if they are a universal thing, or if i need to be looking for specific things. i'm gonna keep the stock dash piece and remove the instrument cluster that's behind it. mounting all of the gauges to the dash piece in the original holes,
i'm just not sure about which to look at cause there are so many different variables like; electrical, mechanical, and all that crap. any advice would be apreciated. ![]() squints.

mechanical gauges are...how do i put this. say you have a mechanical oil gauge, theres going to be a small tube that runs from youre sending unit to your gauge using the actual oil and oil pressure to make a reading on youre gauge.
an electrical gauge uses a wire from your sending unit to your gauge. i believe most, if not all gauges are electrical. im pretty positive of this but if im wrong im sure ill find out soon enough |

guages mounted in the car you want to be electrical. if you were to mount them outside, mechanical would be okay.

The only mechanical gauge I would want is oil pressure. You can get any mechanical gauge other than a mechanical volt meter. For a mechanical fuel pressure gauge you need an isolator (you don't want fuel going into your car).

i agree on the oil pressure. i dont trust electric wires, especially with my oil pressure
and fuel in the car is a bad idea. unless you like the idea of a fuel leak and a wire arching causing everything to go up in flames |

Kind of related to this thread...
AutoMeter has a promotion for $10-75 rebate until the end of June. I'm not a fan of rebates but if your going to by an Autometer gauge anyway, you have nothing to lose. Auto Meter I just got a $30 of $100 coupon from Summit in the mail as well so it looks like combining the two deals will get me a pretty good deal on that wideband I've been wanting

build your own, i used autometer electric sport comp guages except for the tach and speedo, they don't make a dual range sport comp 5 inch tach so i had to use a pro comp one so i had to buy a matching speedo , if you don't need a dual range tach you can have matching guages. sure mechanical guages are more accurate but these electrical are pretty close, i've hooked up a mechanical oil press just to check the pressure and it was right in line with the electrical one

the whole thing is in 3 seperate pieces, take off the dash portion, take out the guage cluster and basically gut it, get out the dremel and start grinding , take your time because you don't want to make the holes too big, my guages are just press fitted into the enlarged holes, btw i used 2 1/16 size guages
i actually thought i was being original when i made this a few years ago and wouldn't you know it as soon as i finished i must've seen a half dozen others square light cars who did the same thing , oh well , other then the guages it's a free mod that in my opinion looks a lot better then tacking them onto the dash Last edited by 86_Notch; May 14th, 2008 at 09:49 PM. |

anyway, i was thinking about eventually filling those areas with a few more gauges, just for shits. and the a/c control "hole" with some switches. this car, by the way, is going to be pretty much a track car, at some point. that's why i'm taking all that other crap out. also, since i won't be running any air/heat, is there anything i can take out that will free up room behind the dash and maybe shave some pounds? i wouldn't think it would be that much, but every little bit could help.

you can do whatever you want, mine is a street car and i chose to keep the heater controls functional , just make sure you get the 2 1/16 guages and not the larger ones or else they won't fit

yeah. that's what i planned on going with. your looks good, btw. i like it. however, i'm not a fan of the way the dash in our cars looks. the grayish crap around the gages and the strip on the passenger side of the dash. i painted it all semi-gloss black and even though i can't paint for shit, i think it looks way better, especially with some white gauges. i have two crappy white face sunpro gauges now. Temp and Oil Pressure. but, they look really clean against a black background.
