88 5.0, 500 dollars...........project

alright so a while back i talked to a guy who said he had a 88 gt, he said one day he went to crank on it and it wouldnt turn over, he said that he wasnt very mechanically inclined....

so i told him i would give him 1500, he said ok, but then some things came up and i wasnt able to do it, then a few weeks go by and he sends me a message saying he will take 500 right now if i come and get it out of his drive way!

so i did, last night i rolled it off the trailer, i first checked to make sure the engine wasnt seized or something, then i put the battery on the charger, a hour later i gave it a try and it slowly turned over, so then i grabbed a new battery and the sucker started right up........

ill get some pics up in the next few days, but i wanted to know what you guys recommend on after i get it running good and cleaned up

its a really clean car, black with the origanal ponies, red interior its also got a AOD

what can those transmissions take?

im going to find out what gears are in it today, do any of you know what were avaliable for gears in 88?

thanks!

that's awesome.

dude sells a car cause it won't start and all it was, was a dead battery? can't beat that with a stick.

i think the stock ratio in those was a 2.73. if i'm wrong i'm sure i'll get made fun of here shortly.
if it does still have the stock gears, that's one of the first things i would upgrade. after you getting it mechanically sound, of course.

but, congrats on the new addition.

either 2.73 or some autos had a 3.08 (but I am not sure about in 88, I think they were all 2.73 then).

The stock AOD pretty much sucks, but it should make for a good driver for $500. Can beat that shit.

If you think gears and slicks cost 1000 dollars, tell me what ratio, and tire size you want. I accept paypal.

hey thanks for all the info

so it has been starting and then it will die within a few seconds, i was thinking bad gas because it sat for so long. but i tor the bottom of the dash apart to find that the thing had a security system in it that is literally tied into everything, i think it might be what is shutting it off but not sure.

im going to look furthur into tommorrow, but im not sure.

im going to drain the tank and flush the system along with filter, then put in some new gas and then hook it to our top engine cleaner that i have at my work, then do the basics like wires, plugs, cap, rotor, belt. then ill go from there but im going to see about getting al that security stuf out of there, i might have to clean up some of the wiring under the dash but other then that its a pretty clean car, ill get some pics on as soon as i can

Generally, aftermarket security systems don't tie into the fuel pump, which would have to be the case if it stalls after it is running. I know, I install them. I would listen for the pump and see if it is still running when it stalls.

ya im pretty sure the pump is still running when it stalls, if i was to think that the security system was the problem, i would assume it would be tied into the ignition system and not the fuel pump.

someone didnt take there time when installing this, its got zip ties everywhere, im going to remove it all tommorrow.

Usually the starter wire is interrupted. Sometimes the ignition is interrupted, but usually not... and usually when it is interrupted, it wont allow the vehicle to start in the first place. They stopped doing that because if something fails in the ignition interrupt while the car is running, it could cause an accident if the ignition disconnects while you were in the middle of a turn.. things like that. People got sued and those features disappeared. Not to say thats not the case.. you may be one of the lucky ones with an old and rare unit.

Possibly take the IAC off and clean it up with some brake parts cleaner, let it dry and reinstall. That thing can make it stall everytime you let your foot of the gas pedal.

Btw there is probably a warrant out for your arrest not because for $500 sounds like you stole that car!

Never heard of that one. I've been doing this for almost 10 yrs, and I know every brand that was worth anything for the past 10, so either that was installed when the car was relatively new or it is a cheapo, either way, its junk at this point and good that you are removing it.

sorry the security system was called whistler

so i ripped all that and got the interior together, it turns out it was shutting off because the ignition key switch was faulty so it would cutt of power to the car causing it to die

so a $20 ignition, $80 battery, $500 clean GT.........everything else......priceless!!

i did a compression test on it, its got a consistant 140 out of every cylinder, and it runs smooth!
