Top Dead Center?

Took off all my EFI componets so I am ready to get my motor switched to carb... One dum mistake so far is that I pulled my distributor without marking top dead center... Any notes on how to best do this on a 302 motor....???

Here is what the motor looks like so far after break down:

A quick note to anyone looking for spare parts for your Mustang EFI goto:

pull #1 spark plug, cut a piece of coathangar and stick it in the hole. remove valve cover, turn engine over, while watching the valves for #1. as the piston pushes the coathangar up AFTER the intake valve opens you will know you are on #1 compression stroke...then you can use your timing pointer and '0' should be top dead center (as long as the outer ring of the balancer hasnt slipped). If you find top dead center while the exhaust valve is closing, then you are at the exhaust stroke and one complete revolution of the crankshaft to tdc again will be compression stroke, where you can drop in your dist. again for #1

number 1 is on the other side and it's always the cylinder that sticks out the furthest.now just pull # 1 plug out and put your finger over the hole and have some one crank it over until you feel air pushing out your now on the compression stroke now use a rachet to get it where you want.I wouldn't stick a coat hanger in there

here is a easy way. take a 15/16 socket and manually turn the motor over until the timing marks line up with 0 on the pully. and then put your distributor in and make sure the rotor points in the 12 oclock position. that is the number 1 spark plug. once you get it in. if the car doesent start it is 180 degrees out all you have to do is turn the motor again until the 0 comes back around and put the distributor back in at the 12 oclock position and it should be good. sounds hard but very easy. i just did this past weekend on my 88 ho

That will work fine as long as number 1 is at the 12 o'clock position...

ok, so far:

- harmonic balancer timing mark set to 0
- compression on piston one should be blowing out
- timing rotation at 12:00
- fire order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

I went ahead and installed a Mech. Fuel pump so my project got a little deeper but the balancer came off easy and the cam cover was a little bear to work but its on so hear are some pics...

also number 1 doesn't have to be at 12 as you can put anywhere you want.so in other words if you got it at tdc and just dropped in the dis the post thats closest to the rotor can be number 1.

just a tip if you where in a hurry.
