Cam Choice

i was planning on putting a cam into my stock motor just for this summer. now i was told with certain cams you need to shave your piston head in order to gain valve clearence so i wanted to know what type cam b/e/f/x/z can i use without needing any clearence...?

yes...first off, there are tons of threads about cams on here. i currently am running the ford b-cam. it is not that great of a cam, and many people would recommend a trickflow stage 1 or similar by comp or crane cams. if u want a streetable cam the stage 1 is a good choice. since your engine is stock that would be an ok choice. if you want a ford cam, i would get the e-cam (more lift but less duration than the b cam)

dont expect tremendous gains from just a cam. other things such as heads, intake, fuel supply will boost power alot with a cam

darrell can speak for experience and should know...but in all reality, any one will tell you it doesnt matter what cam you buy (except for stock), you always, and i mean always, check valve to piston clearance unless your are famously riich and dont care

If someone told you , you need to shave your pistons, Don't get any more advice from them.

You will get too much lift pushing the valve so it will smack the top of the piston. Not good. Any reputable dealer should be able to help you with this. Good luck in your research.

I am running a Comp cam. ( part #31-218-2 ) I nice little boost but not to radical for the street.

I got heavier valve springs, so my original rockers wouldn't fit so I need to get roller rockers. Now my nice aluminum valve cover wouldn't fit. Be prepared. We all have an expensive hobby.,

Piston notching, or cutting notches deeper is a common practice for typically high lift cams and dome pistons, so its not stupid advice, probaly a little more like premature to unwarranted for your situation

Is that a smart ass comment? I'm not exactly sure where you're going with that......

As for your original question, you said "putting a cam into my stock motor just for this summer". Are you saying you are going to put a cam in for this summer and then put the stock cam back in???? If so, why? Don't bother wasting the time. Otherwise, if I misinterpreted what you said then a good cam for a stock engine if you really feel you need one is a Trick Flow part number TFS-51402000. It should spice things up a bit and give a noticeable idle tone but don't expect big gains because with a stock engine you won't have big gains with a cam change. You will most likely need to change your valve springs as well. You can probably get away with the stock springs but when you damage your valvetrain (or worse) don't say I didn't tell you. In all honesty I wouldn't waste the time, money or energy on putting a cam in a stock engine. Guys are running 11s with stock cams. The gain on a stock engine isn't worth it, but that is just my opinion.

anyway, you want to put a cam around all of the stuff on your engine. a cam should be one of the last things you do. Like somebody said, the stock cam is capable of holding its place until things get pretty modified. Save that money and start saving some more for heads and intake, then get the cam and you'll love it.

Sounds like you should rebuild everything. If you get new heads with out doing anything to the bottom end. The top (heads ) are nice and tight while the bottom is ...... lets call it well worn you will end up changing the bottom sooner then later, Unless you plan on just cruising with this car ; and that is fine too.
