Odometer / tach not working

Hi,

My girlfriend has a 96 GT and her odometer has not worked since I have known her. The tach looks to work, but it is stuck on the other side of the pin where the needle sits when the car is off.

I need to know a fix for these......we really need to get an inspection.

Anyone know why the odometer would stop working? And how do I go about fixing the tach? Ill see if I can take pics of the tach to help explain what its doing.

Thanks

So, If I replace the whole gauge unit things should work again?

How much do those things go for? Any good places to look around for one.

Thanks

I can tell ya this. You may have to go to the dealer for that. What they do is write down the mileage it shows and they send it out for a different company to have it done. That shit aint cheap. Otherwise I think its tampering with mileage and considered fraud.

it ran me about 700$ in total.

you do have to go to the dealer for it, cause as modified said, it gets into legal issues concerning the mileage and tampering with it

Most if not all states have a process that you can record the old mileage and the new mileage and the date it was changed. Depends on the state on how that is all made official, some require a sticker attached to the left door frame, title exceptions, notorized documents etc.

Not really related but I'm bored so...
My 1991 Mustang that I bought brand new shows a potential odometer rollback note. When I registered in the state I live in now, I reported the actual odometer 25K and beyond mechanical limits, the previous state was 87K when I registered it there. My "25K" and beyond mechanical limits was recorded as 25K so now it looks like something fishy happened and my odometer was rolled back. I'm never going to sell it but if I do, I'll have to explain that to someone.

It's better to explain it to the person looking to buy it (if you sell it) so they dont find out later. Plus your being honest about it. Oooooohh how I can't wait til Monday!!!!!!

Thanks for all of the replies

So the odometer is going to have to be done by a pro. What about the tach? Can that be fixed by just replacing the gauges?

Anyone have any 96 gt gauges you wanna sell ?

Also, forgive my ignorance, but the odometer will cause the car to fail inspection correct?

Depends on the state I guess. In VA, the car is only driven a few feet into a garage so they do not notice. The emissions is a seperate test on a dyno so they will see it but the inspection is already a done deal at that point. My 1991 has a bouncy speedo (0-140 bounce) and it's passed for the last 10 years like that. The odometer actually works and is accurate though.

If you can see that the needle is stuck on the other side of that pin, its a simple fix. You just have to take the cluster out and unscrew 4 or 5 screws holding that plastic to the back. Once thats off just move it to the side it should be on and to make sure it doesnt do it again press the needle down with your finger so it seats onto the little pin mechanism well.
