clutch & flywheel ?'s

i'm not sure what kind of power my car is making. but assuming that the engine is in good shape, i'd think it would be kinda strong (i don't have unreal expectations for it though.) considering what it has on it. edelbrock heads (don't know which though) lunati cam (again, don't know which) cobra intake, bbk fenderwell cai, full MAC system; shorties, o/r h, 2 1/2" catback(waiting to be installed). under drive pulleys, 70mm TB, and a few other little thing that aren't really performance mods.

then there's an aluminum d/s, bbk short throw, and 3.73's

anyway, to get to my questions. i'm going to be putting this POS in the shop very soon, and was wondering if these variables should effect my decision on which clutch and flywheel to get. also, should i even worry about ordering things for my car, or just let the shop get it for me? i know i can find good deals on the internet. but, will shops generally charge more for installation of parts not sold by them?

i just like doing it my way, cause i don't have to drop such a chunk at once. i can get stuff piece by piece and then go in for the labor once i have everything.

anyway, any advice on clutch and flywheel choices would be appreciated.

p.s. to make a long post even longer, any HP estimates based on the mods that i have? just an after thought. thanks guys.

you would have to be more specific on what parts you have for the pony power as for the clutch, I have herd many good things about spec and use one myself and like it alot........unless you plan on putting down a lot more power in the near future I would just get the stock flywheel resurfaced if able to. Talk to the guys at your shop and see what they say about you getting the parts...

I'd be looking into a Lakewood bellhousing at the same time. I've had a clutch explode doing a burnout on the street. I won't own a 5 speed car without a steel bellhousing anymore. I'll have to dig up some pictures...

Shit! Exploded a clutch on the street? I've done 3 gear clutch burnouts, but haven't had one come apart yet. A good bell housing is a good investment.

The ford HD (non king cobra), the one you need steroids to push the pedal...that is my favorite clutch. It has held up to nitrous launches at 5000 rpms without missing a beat for years without destroying the transmission and is still very drivable (besides the huge pedal effort).

M-7563-A302N pressure plate and M-7550-A302N disc or M-7550-X302 disc.

I have a king cobra in my other car and it doesn't have the same holding power, but the pedal is very easy.

The spec stage 2 is also a nice clutch, stage 3 is way too grabby for the street though.

centerforce is OK, but overrated in my opinion. Only seem to have about the same holding power at the king cobra.

Ram also makes a decent clutch.

These are the only pictures I could find without digging deep. You can see the clutch is no longer there. Some of it was stuck in the floor and the rest was in the fire wall. It destroyed the starter, bellhousing and block. It completely sheared off every bolt holding the bellhousing to the engine and put a hole in the block in the number 8 cylinder. Even the headers were beat to shit from debris flying around. When a clutch explodes, it is very bad news. They usually take a leg or two off your body. That was luckily not the case this time.

usually high rpm launches, but sometimes they just fly apart. You know there is always that 1 in 10,000 part that gets through quality control that should have never left the factory.

It happens alot more than 1 in 10,000.

I was just saying that there is 1 in 10,000 that flys apart for no reason. The rest fly apart due to extreme use and abuse. I haven't had one go yet...not looking forward to it...that looked like a mess. Isn't there a kevlar bag you can wrap around the bellhousing to make SFI approved? I know they make scatter shields like that.

When I bought my car it had a fresh 6 puck spec put in it and at first with the locker it was impossible to drive and park in reverse, but with my new rear it is a lot better and streetable.

Oh, I see what you are saying. I originally though you were implying that this doesn't happen often. I agree that it is probably 1 in 10,000 or more that come apart due to quality control. Most of them come apart due to rpm, power, stress, vehicle weight amonst other variables. Its not super common but it happens enough to make me want to take precautions. I think they do make trans blankets that are SFI approved.

LOL, yeah a 6 puck is not made for street driving. It is an ON/OFF switch.

Interesting, I had never read that before and have one in my 91 Mustang. That explains a lot. That clutch and my 2.73 leads to excessive pain in traffic.
