Supercharger motor parts requirement?
Hey guys i have an 87 Mustang Gt Hatch. Converted to MAF and all that jazz and i want a Supercharger BUT i was woundering what would have to be upgraded to make sure i wont be risking hurting my engine or just destroying it or any parts.
The thing is they guy before they guy i got it from rebuilt it...So im not sure if is used forged internals (pistons, rods, and so on) And the stock Crank isnt forged correct? Should i replace the stock crank? And how do i check to see if the pistons are forged or not, is there an numbers or anything on the head of them or anything? This is a real bummer it sounds like a lot of work... -_- But any info will def. help thanks guys. Finally im looking at the Vortech V-2 SQ S/C (8-10 PSI) even if i dont have forged for some reason, is it still safe to run? Or would it be a bad idea, risky or livin on barrowed time? Heh. thanks for any help guys i dont know much and you have helped me alot before, thanks! -The Novice. |

As with any build I do or motor I get from someone else, I always break it down and inspect all parts as possible such as the pistons. Once everything checks ok, I assembly lube the stuff and on I go. So i you haven't done that, I would do that so you know what you are working with first Otherwise you might not know, you might have cheap ass speed pro hyper pistons which are nothing more than sprite cans molded together to form a piston(figurablly speaking) now if they are speed pro Forged, you are good. So if I were you, before installing or doing ANYTHING, break it down and inspect what you bought. Pull numbers and google if you have too. Once it's cleared, BE SURE TO USE ASSEMBLY LUBE REGARDLESS IF IT ALREADY HAS IT OR NOT on your cylinder walls and lifters and so forth.
You can run a supercharger safely with hyper pistons under 9psi. You need to back the timing off a little if I'm not mistaken, upgrade the watered down octane fuel you have now for some 93 if you want the best performance you can get. but now it gets expensive, you also need to upgrade your MAF, get a cold air intake for more "MAss Air", you might need to regap or better yet...BUY some new plugs and gap them colder for the spark you need for running your s/c.

Yeah i figured it would be a big B...Perhaps if i have to take it apart i might just Stroke it, i would perfer "All Motor" HP more i think and the accomplishment of me doing, plus i would know what i put into it....I dunno though, 347 stroker is sounding nice though. Any one know how much HP you can make with a 347 Stroker kit? Jw sorry, thanks alot for your help btw! Much appriciated!

To run 8 PSI, you don't need to do anything other than back the timing off a few degrees and make sure your fuel system is adequate for the power level you expect...i.e. 42 lb injectors unless you are going to use an FMU

ryan88 is right as well, just saying the extra stuff if you at least want to feel more power on top of the s/c. The 347 stroker is a hell of an idea but shit, for the price of building that, you can have a 351w making the same power and still have a shitload more displacement and power to work with. My tally so far including the block is $530.00 and all I need is a balancer, flywheel and carb. I will be pushing around 365hp to the wheels with my current setup but I will let the dyno numbers determine that.
So you can consider doing a 351w because there's not gonna be to much more you can do to a stroker motor which I can say you can push a good 500hp out of it but then you will have some serious worries in the future. Not trying to discourage you or anything I promise, but people always tell me "you can't" "you can't" and 9-7/16 - 10, I always end up doing what they say I can't so go with what you feel would be better for your pocket and yourself. Me personally, I am building a 351w that a local shop has seen and they have told me that this build will be the best of a lifetime so consider that 351w not 351m. Need some tips or anything just pm me.

Well what i was thinking is i could just bore my block to a 347. That way its lighter and can still use most of the bolt ons. I figure if i was gunna spend 3K on a S/C can a 347 be that much more? I wouldnt buy a new block, i would use my stock block, which has good heads and intake and all that jazz so i could still use that. Then prob get a 347 Stroker Kit from woody for anywhere from $800-$1200. Everyone says is really expensive, but am i missing something major?

dont forget about your compression ratio too. and im sure if you build your motor youre not gonna wanna stick with just 8-10 psi so you may want to use dished pistons, if you plan on swapping pullies for a night at the track or some tire thrashing. 347s, when built right and planned out, make very good amount of horsepower and there is gobs of torque downlow in the rpm range.
