Where'd it go?

My car (1990 LX 5.0, pretty much stock) has been making this weird knocking sound when I'm driving. The last time it did that it needed coolant. I put coolant in it this time - a full bottle. The radiator was full for a second, but after a couple of minutes, the coolant level was low again. I put a second, full bottle, of coolant in and it did the same thing, and is now overheating when I drive. Where is the coolant going? Does this mean I have a crack in my block somewhere? Busted Thermostat? Any help would be appreciated!!

You may have never fully filled you car up in the first place.

Fill with the car running, top off, wait for the thermostat to open, then top off.

I couldn't imagine you couldn't see were such a large amount of coolant was going to. My car does drain out that overflow tank pretty dam nfast, and doesn't ever get to normal temps when running. Hell Id lick my intake manifold after racing 6 times.

+1 There could still be air trapped in your cooling system.

It does start smoking after about 20-30 mins of driving, and it has a rust smell to it (if that makes sense). But after letting it cool down and opening the radiator, the coolant level is low again!

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Yeah thats how your suppose to do it.
Let it warm up at idle with the rad cap off. so air can escape. IF you suspect leaks afterwards. take to a shop and have it pressure tested.
