A Few Questions (Belt Routing)

im new here on tha forum and i own a 83 5.0. i dont know if this is the right forum to ask this question but its the only 5.0 forum and i assume all 5-0's are the same. well im installing a cam into my motor and while i have the pulleys and all the other accesories off i want to take off the a/c and whatever that other thing is on the bottom left. it kind of looks like another a/c compressor or somethin of that sort. with those 2 deleted from the belt routing i found a new route for the belt but no way to relieve pressure or a way to make room to slide the belt on. could i just buy a tight belt and slide it on with a prybar?? or would that make the belt wear quicker because it has no slack? is there a bracket i can buy that i can drill holes in my heads for and have some way to make the belt tighter and looser?? ive only delt with chevys but always like mustangs and i know chevys the alternator slides back and forth. same way on 5-0?

You'll prolly have to get an A/C delete kit so you can still use your tensioner pulley.

i can make some brackets out of the old brackets. im good at making new stuff out of old stuff. but i have heard something about moving the tensioner pulley to a different location??? im going to have to look at it a little bit more i know i can figure something out. if i have to get some new holes drilled in my heads now will be the time to do it because i am rebuilding them right now......hopefully the blow by is being caused from the valve guides and not the piston rings.

I didn't need to install the delete kit, hope this drawing helps, belt sizes may vary as I had to adapt my 83 alternator bracket to my 93 motor.

Does this not make the waterpump run backwards?

I'm wondering what size belt if you're bypassing the a/c and smog....or just bypassing the a/c even. I have a smog pump delete but wouldn't mind getting rid of it all together.

It is a bracket that bolts to your water pump and your top bolt pf your p/s pump that is in a triangular shape your tensioner is move there to eliminate the a/c and smog pump I have it. The belt size is 5060720DR. Basically a 72" belt.

Where'd ya get it? Wondering also if it'll effect the belt if I go and get a KB s/c put on it. Things I have to keep in mind. Thanks.

Umm I dont know where it was bought from lol I bought it from a friend but I think he got it from brothersperformance.com . So check it out it a a/c eliminator bracket and I have no clue if its gonna mess with your s/c I wouldnt think that it would but I dont have one of those lol. But hey what do you have to lose.

Once again... Will this not make the waterpump spin backwards?

No it won't. Follow the path of the belt if the crank was spinning one direction and you'll see that the waterpump will spin the same direction for all of the above diagrams.

No it won't spin backwards. The water pump spins counterclockwise. The diagram above shows the water pump spinning in the same counterclockwise direction in all three scenarios. It also has the correct belt length for all three scenarios. Your Ken Belle will or should have another crank pulley to bring the belt for the s/c fwd of the other belt. You don't have to delete kit your smog pump unless you are going to run the original belt, same for the a/c. A delete kit gives you a dummy pulley to make up for the missing pulley. At least I'll say all the ones I have seen do this. Maybe someone knows different. Now there might be a bracket you need to mnt the p/s where the a/c is, I don't know.

I already have a dummy pulley for the smog pump. I just wanna get rid of the pullies all together if the component is gone. Removing the a/c and smog pump pullies would be nice. Power steering has to stay though.

If you move your p/s pump to where the a/c is you should be able to use the 70.5 in belt the diagram calls for. It will also give you better accessibility to get to your p/s pump. You'll probably want to clean it up and paint it if it looks bad up there in plain view. Then you can just take the smog pump off and the a/c off with no dummy pulleys. If you don't move your p/s pump up to the a/c spot you will have to get an a/c delete kit because you might not have enough belt surface on the water pump routing your belt without it.

Come to think of it there is no way to route the belt if you don't have a pulley, either A/C delete or the P/S pump where the A/C is. You couldn't route it around your tensioner without it.

Steeda has the bracket needed to move the a/c up for 39.95. March performance has the bracket to move your idler pulley to the a/c position without moving your p/s pump for 46.87.
