Finalization Help Of 351w Build (Impatient Readers Beware)

Alright, I got my motor sold and got my stimulus check and I want to make sure with those of experience, I am getting the right combination of stuff so here we go.

Don't worry about the hp I am trying to push for, this is more about flow at this particular point.

Block - 71-74 or 74-78 Casting 351w

Heads Used Now = 351w D0OE 60cc Heads Re-conditioned(Cleaned) not milled, with new valve seals and soon to have 1.6 or 1.7 roller rockers by eithier Scorpions or Harland Sharp and rocker girdle.

Camshaft - Summitracing.com
EDL-7182 | 224*/234* 496"/520"

Lifters - SummitRacing.com
Included in the Camshaft Kit Above

Pistons - Currently Installed
Keith Black Forged with 10.1 Compression Ratio Raised Top

Intake Manifold - Ordering Debate
Old School Holley Street Master Intake
or
Edelbrock Performer(NOT RPM) Intake

Carburetor
Edelbrock 750cfm

Flywheel and Balancer -
28oz of course, not need to go on about this part

Crankshaft - Stock Re-conditioned

So that's what I have to finish up for the parts showing the summit on it. So is that a good setup? I know you're all gonna say aftermarket heads so to save your breath on that... Right now I am staying with my heads I have now and will soon get some aftermarket heads for better flow numbers So all I want to know if this is a good setup for what I curretnly have.

Thanks

are you putting this in a truck ?? you might as well put a cast iron intake on there if you're gonna use a performer, get a stealth or at least an rpm intake

750 edelbrock is a lil much for stock heads ,try a 600-650 edelbrock, or a 675 holley they will give you a lil area to make more power and not buy new carb..nice cam tho,the cam you have needs the rpm or anything from about 1500-6500 give or take a lil..those heads are nice 351w i had them once and added bigger valves.. what tranny do you have.. sounds like a nice set up.. i know a few guys with summit cams and are fine

It's going in my 89 LX

86gtconvert - "A Lil Much"? Are you positive because I've seen 350's with stock heads and a .30 over bore with 750 carbs and a holley will never sit on my motor LOL. I have a T5 tranny with centerforce II clutch. Hey the heads are 60cc chambered heads are you sure 750 would be a bit to much? 650cfm does sound good though.

86_Notch - I have had serious issues with rpm intakes. I won't get a studder when I mash the throttle from idle to hear a good quick rev would I? I used to hate that with a passion on my old car.

Anyone know how big of a lift I can go with D0OE heads with dual valve springs?

try the victor jr intake.. its a bit pricy... but its better than the alternative if you are looking at edelbrock anyways

Yeah matter of fact, about an hour ago I was looking at that. The super victor too but the victor Jr is good too.

before we changed our mind on our stroker windsor block we had planned on using the victor jr intake with a Holley 850... but we are also talking about a bigger motor with big heads, and a gigantic cam... However I think the victor Jr will be great for you

cool. Now before any of you think about this motor, it's not some junkyard, old garage found parts motor. This was the original block with re-conditioned heads and new I-Beam rods and pistons... New internals mind as well say and a 565 cam already in it. The only thing that was "garage found" is the edelbrock 750cfm carb that a friend is selling for 120 bucks and I said... sure bring it on.

Thanks,

Ok guys a couple more questions and I promise I will be good to go...

Just to make sure I am on the right page. To get a baseline startup with no starting problems, I just rotate the motor until the "1" piston is BTDC and then put everything on and then connect my dizzy up with the rotor facing on the "1" firing order terminal correct? and just proceed with the rest.

Second question is is there anyway to pull an EFI motor out without wasting money ($60.00) getting a "lower manifold" bracket from jegs to pull out the motor. Can I just stick my arms in there and pull it out (Figurablly speaking).

Thanks

Ok since I basically built the same engine, here's what i think.....

Block: the newer the block the better. Metallurgy methods and the purity of the metals got better with technology over the years....

heads: port them if you have the money. If not get the biggest valves possible and 1.6 rockers...

camshaft: good choice on that....

pistons: good choice

intake: I have 10.5:1 compression and the same cam as you. I was told by my engine machinist to go with a victor jr manifold from edelbrock. He said the other manifolds are just glorified stock ones. If you look at them you see what he's talking about. the victor jr is actually designed for high rpms from the drawing board. You just don't want to loose power at 6000+rpms because you intake manifold is holding you back....

Carb: Don't buy edelbrock. They are good carbs for trucks, not sports car. Holley is the way to go. Way more people know how to adjust them too. 750cfm is a little to big for your compression. Go with a Holley 700cfm double pumper with mechanical secondaries. (PM me and I'll tell you how to get an an amazing deal on one like I did)

P.S. A lot of uneducated people put carbs that are too big on their engines thinking it's just better cause it's bigger. 700cfm is the biggest you want to go with you setup and leaves room form future improvment...

your tranny will have a lot to determine how your engine runs, for instance your combo with a 750 holley and rpm intake will run like a dog in front of a stock auto with a stock convertor and stock gears but will run great with a manual trans or auto with a 3200 stall and a set of 373 gears or better
