Headers
I have 351w heads on my 302 block. The headers that came with the car come real close to my starter and it is getting heat soaked. Can I run these even though it is not a 351w block??

you cannot run 351 headers on your 302 b/c they are made to accomodate the larger deck height of the 351

351W heads do fit on a 302 but you have to use head bolt bushings or you can run into alignment and clamping issues between the heads and block. A 351W uses a larger diameter head bolt than a 302. Everything else about the head is the same as a 302 head. Running a 351W head is not an upgrade over a 302 head. Most years the heads had the same port volumes, chamber volumes and valve sizes.

1989 GT asked if that even works which sounds like he is asking if 351W heads can be used on a 302. I answered the question.

OK time out here...........
small block ford heads are small block ford heads. You can take the heads off a 351w and put them on a 302,289,260 ect...... Only 351 Cleavland and modified ford heads are different The deck height on a 351w is slightly higher than that of a 302 to accommodate for the longer stroke which gets you the extra 49ci.... Now I have those BBK headers on my 351w, they most likely will NOT work with a 302 because they will be touching either the steering, starter motor, bell housing or maybe the floor.... I think your problem with the headers cooking the starter motor has absolutely NOTHING to do with your heads, it has to do with the either the headers being a shitty design or the maybe the starter motor you put in is bigger or shaped a little different, in turn putting it closer to the headers. P.S. you could try putting heat reflective tape on the starter motor you know.... maybe wrap the headers is asbestos as well.....

I have 351w long tubes on my 302, and they are too close to my clutch cable. They cost me a 30$ a month clutch cable bill.

Well I starting having the problem with the stock starter. So I installed the PM mini. Still getting the same problem. I did notice the other day when I went to start it after the motor was hot it would drag and almost seemed like the battery was dead. Then a puff of smoke from the passanger side. Had my son jump in and try and turn it over while I looked in the starter area. He tuened the key and SPARKS a flyin. WTF!!!
