T-5 transmission fluid

Hey guys! i'm putting a T-5 in my mustang and i'm wondering what fluid to use? I want to use some good stuff, preferably synthetic. My friend says GM synchromesh is really good in his dodge stealth. I was wondering if you guys had any experience with synthetic fluid and what is best? Mobil 1? B&M synthetic?

thanks

also, i've heard bad things about synthetics. something about it not having enough friction in order to mesh with the syncros making it harder on the synchros to shift. should i go synthetic? also, should i go dexron mercon or syncromesh? royal purple makes syncromax which is synthetic syncromesh.

get dexron III(3) or IV (4) with mercon you dont need a synthetic, and it will be exactly 3 quarts.

I've always had good luck with plain old D/M III. I've heard some guys use lightweight 30W synthethetic gear oil for track only use, but I have never tried it.

i know ford recommends dexron/mercon but i wanted to put some better stuff. Has anyone used syncromesh from GM? my buddy uses it in his AWD Stealth and he says stealth guys swear by this stuff. I'm just curious because i want to put the best stuff in my transmission. something a little better than regular dexron/mercon

No, use D/M III.

Using other stuff will not be better, it will be a quick route to a rebuild.

What would make Syncromesh "better" in a T5 and what is wrong with dexron/mercon? They are two different fluids with different characteristics. Maybe one is better then the other but I personally would not switch without some actual evidence or at least a theory of why one was better than the other in the T5. I did see that Amsoil suggests their version of Syncromesh can be used in a T5 although they make no claims of it being better in a T5 or that it is a replacement for Mercon/Dexron, only that it would be easier for the retailers to stock only Sycromesh instead of a bunch of different types of transmissions fliuds.

AMSOIL Manual Synchromesh Transmission fluid is a versatile transmission lubricant. It reduces inventory needs, is readily available and is cost effective compared to vehicle manufacturer branded products.
Recommended for automotive and light truck applications that require synchromesh transmission fluid. Applications include manual transmissions and transaxles such as New Venture NV T350, NV 1500, NV 2550, NV 3500, NV 3550, NV 5600, and Tremec T4, T5, T18, T56, T176, TKO500, TKO600, TR 3450 and TR 3550. Replaces MTF-94 fluid for Land Rover, MG, and Mini Cooper. Replaces Honda Genuine MTF fluid for manual transaxles and Texaco MTX fluid.

I use Castrol brand Dexron myself, the Amsoil site was the first one I found that mentioned any comparison or reference to a T5.

thats a good question. anyone know? I ended up getting schaffers (sp?) synthetic dex/mer III oil. they guy at the speed shop said its completely un-advertized and they've been around since mid 1800's. He said the fastest guys around put that stuff in their trans and its the only stuff that holds up.

anyone used it? should i stay away from synthetic?

I've heard of people putting a light weight synthetic gear oil in their T5s for drag race use only. If drag race use only sounds like what you use your car for, then go ahead and try it. If not, stick with Dex III, if it aint broke don't fix it.

yeah this stuff is dexron mecron III its not lightweight gear oil but would the synthetic oil make a huge difference if it's a street/strip car? is it gonna be ok? I don't want drivability issues but i want good performance from my fluid. its just regular dexron mercon synthetic stuff

it could. remember syncros work on friction. they need to be able to make 2 gears turning at differnt speeds to the same speed in a fraction of a second if it cant get that grip it will grind into gear. thats why old non world class t-5's use gear lube cause they were all brass but now they are fiber and carbon backed so they have to be able to grab smoothly.
