best power options for stock shortblock
I have a 90 5.0. It has a GT40 Tubular intake, 75mm throttle body, 24lb inj, wet nos, 3.73s, C4 (will likely go with 3000ish stall, will be used 95% 1/8th mile...minimal street. I'm new to 5.0s and NOS and I want the car to be fun and as economical as I can make it. I know racing is not economical, but I want to as thrifty as I can. I figure that I will make a few mistakes with the NOS so I'm counting on running through a few shortblocks. I would like to come up with a nice cam/head combo that would work well with the stuff I already have and a stock shortblock without notching pistons so I can use salvage yard engines. I was considering the patriot heads but I'm not sure that they will hit the pistons or not. This is just gonna be a toy that will be played with at the track, not a serious run every weekend car. If my wife, in-laws, kids, etc wanna run it...lets go have some fun. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

stop calling it NOS, N2O people will get mad at you, lol
You can run up to around 150 shot of nitrous without major problems as long as you set it up correctly I bought my nos dry system used for 200 dollars then spent around 100 dollars on the odds and ends that I required, so you can do it cheap as long as you look around As far as I know the patriot heads work fine on stock pistons, but I am not an expert on them

zex dry kit 125 shot , autolite 23 or 24 plugs, 190 lb or 255 intank pump ( not necessary but considering the stock one is almost 20 years old it's cheap insurance ) 93 octane and no more then 12 degrees initial timing and yer good to go

I believe hes inquiring about a "Heads and Intake" combo, not about Nitrous. Trick Flow Specialties is what you need to look into, if your not interested in modifying your pistons. They've got matching intake and head configurations for all types of applications. Give them a whirl.

Thanks Goblin, you're exactly right. I'm looking for the best heads/cam route to go with stock pistons. I already have an N2O system on the car along with a GT40 tubular intake. I may just stick with iron heads and spray the snot out of it. Which explorer heads are the best and what years/vehicles did they come on. Thanks guys for the help....

get those iron heads reworked and you'll be fine. We have ppl running 200shots on stock motors with no issues.
the breaking point of the blocks is 550tq and 500hp to give you an idea. of course you can break it at 300hp if enough detonation is present. have fun.

buddy of mine was running high with a stock short block, ported stock heads, rpm intake, big roller cam , and a 750 carb, you don't need any special heads for nitrous use, if you're on a budget get some gt 40s, on my 86 capri , i had a stock short block ( from an 88 mustang ) e cam, gt 40s , cobra intake, 24 lb injectors with a matching meter, 65 mm tb, and with a t5 and 373s i was running high 11s with a 75 shot
