351w 302 question

Question is I heard the blocks were the same block just heads are different deck height. But then in another thread someone said the 351w block can handle more power than the 302. Is this true and if they are the same block then how?

i'm pretty sure they aren't the same block, because when doing a swap you have to change out things like intake, flywheel and oil pan. They are just similar.

Think of the 351W as the big brother to the 302.

They are very similar.

They have same lower mounting points and dimensions
i.e. bellhousing bolt patter, motor mount location, ect ect.

The deck height is taller on the 351 giving it a longer stroke and more cubes
This spreads the heads apart and up a little, so lower intakes are wider.

Heads are interchangeable, but the 302 use 7/16 head bolts and the
351 use 1/2"

Stock for stock the 351W block is a good deal stronger than the 302.
The crank and rods are stonger and the casting on the block itself is
beefier in several places.

The 351W is about 3" taller over all and weighs about 100lbs more.

the web is a ton better on the 351...the engine will sit taller but with a set of vert motor mounts will help that

Two different blocks altogether. Deck height refers to the distance from the crank centerline to the top of the deck (cylinder bore). There are several variations even in 351 and 302s.
